Sensational Sunrises

There have been some sensational sunrises to greet me in recent days, though each weekend for the past six weeks has seen at least one day rain.

This week it was Saturday and Kangaeroo spent the day on the Death Machine, riding only a short distance.

Sunday, though, was a different matter, and we headed out on a 200-km under beautiful blue skies, but dogged by gale-force winds that proved energy sapping.

    Much as I would love to have been tiptoeing, I’m way too fat to do that, so when Mrs. Kangaeroo and I headed off to the Hamura Tulip Festival, it was stomping heavily through the gorgeous flowers. Mrs. Kangaeroo and I had done some cycling tours together in the past, but not since before the COVID-19 pandemic. I’d been pushing all week to go as the return trip is largely flat and a distance I thought Mrs. Kangaeroo would be able to handle despite not having cycled for many years.     「巨人の星」がBig Wickets意味を理解補足に

    　タスマニア州ウェストベリーという田舎の町には巨大なウィケットがある。 「ウィケットって何？」 と思っている人が多いだろう（そもそも考えRooを読んでいただいている人がそもそも「多い」と言い難いけど、わざわざここまで来ていただいた方々の中では「多い」という意味だが、余談、、、）。 ウィケットは、クリケットに使う重要な道具だ。 「うん、、、じゃ、それだったら、クリケットって？」と思うよね。 ま、簡単に言えば野球の元となったスポーツと思えば良く、オーストラリア見たいの英国連邦諸国では非常に人気夏スポーツだ。 　ちなみに、今年あの有名なアニメ「巨人の星」がインドでリメイクすることになったが、インドではクリケットが非常に人気あるため話が野球ではなくクリケットの話しとなった。 ウェストベリーにBig Wicketsがあるのは初タスマニア出身オーストラリア代表クリケット選手ジャック・バッドコック氏を称えるためだ。高さ３メートル幅約３メートルであり、本物のウィケットの大きさのおよそ６倍であり、オーストラリアの「Big Things」仲間入りとして十分な根拠がある。 　 クリケットを題材としたインド版「巨人の星」 【ニコニコ動画】インド巨大市場“スポ根”アニメが進出へ

  • Arrows of Outrageous Fortune

    Mrs. Kangaeroo invited me out on a date today, which turned out to be an absolute ripper (how could any event with Mrs. Kangaeroo not be?), but involved horses, of course! Mrs. Kangaeroo is an avid equestrian and her devotion, best seen when it comes to living and providing loving care, extends to her encyclopedic knowledge of horse-related events going on at any one time in Japan. And she let me know that we were going to be watching a display of yabusame, horseback-mounted archery, on the beach at Enoshima, a small island and tourist attraction about 50 km south of central Tokyo. Horses don’t really do it for me….

    Matilda has been described online as “the worst sports movie ever made.” Kindly, as it turns out.Matilda was a dreadful, alleged comedy about a boxing kangaroo that challenges for the world heavyweight champion title.The movie was made in 1978, when Muhammad Ali was probably at his most widely popular (and the reigning world champion), and starred Elliot Gould, who was then still not too far off the peak of a career that continues going strong today.Co-starring was another A-lister, Robert Mitchum, so it’s hard to argue that the cast and circumstances surrounding the movie didn’t pack a punch.Unfortunately, the kangaroo featured in the film was clearly a bloke in a…

  • Marching Onward

    March draws to a close today, ending the first quarter of the calendar year for 2023 in what seems a stunningly speedy period. Time is, of course, relative. Each year, the relative amount of time each period occupies in our whole lives is shorter. So. it’s only natural that time seems to pass quicker. At least, that’s how I think it works. Spring is beautiful in Tokyo, especially when it’s not raining. After a disjointed week for all sorts of reasons, I got to ride this morning as usual.
