For anyone interested in the long connection between Japan and Australia, this is a particularly nice little anniversary. It is not simply a chance to see koalas: the programme looks at their history at Kanazawa Zoo, their keepers’ work, eucalyptus, kangaroos and the animals’ continuing connection with Australia.

Note: If you’re interested in taking part in some events and haven’t applied before the application dates for taking part in commemorative events closed don’t give up. (Sorry! I only found out about this event and zoo yesterday.) The zoo’s site lists mistakes in the date that invite confusion, and this may be a sufficient reason for the operators to show some leniency for late applications….purely conjecture on my part, but perhaps worth a try if you desperately want to go?

  • Anti-Asian ‘Rage Ranga’ Pauline Hanson’s Soft Spot For Japan

Populist politicians are on the ascendency across the globe. Japan is heading to the polls with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who can probably be called a populist, tapping into strong anti-foreigner sentiment to give her Liberal Democratic Party its traditional grip on power. Joining demagogues like Trump, Farage, Le Pen, Wilders and Milei is Australia’s own “rage ranga” Pauline Hanson, whose political fortunes have taken an astonishing turn. Before going forward, a bit of disclosure: I despise the right-wing form of demagoguery spreading around the world, but lean toward populism on the opposite side of the political spectrum. I’m an angry, fearful old man. That makes me a prime populist…

A Symbol Of Japan That Fits Australia Like A Shoe

Given the powerful pull of the surf culture in Australia, a link with Katsushika Hokusai‘s The Great Wave Off Kanagawa that immediately conveys an image of Japan was almost inevitable, but also symbolizes the strong ties between the two countries almost made for each other. Countless Australian companies, organizations, entrepreneurs, artists and others utilize or have utilized directly or derivatively the iconic Japanese work forming one of Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Even though the Great Wave is an instantly recognizable image that embodies the essence of Japanese spirit, particularly with the inclusion of Mount Fuji, Australia has long recognized the work as a shared connection between the countries….

    Sheer Nonsense? No, Shear Delight!

Australia hasn’t really had much of an impact on Japanese culture over the years, but there is one case that inspires sheer delight….or perhaps that should be “shear?” For Japanese of a certain age, (Choshi wo soroete kurikku, kurikku, kurikku, is a highly familiar song picked up in an early season of Minna no Uta, a radio and TV program broadcast by NHK since 1961 to introduce new tunes to the Japanese public. The song is known in English as Click Go the Shears and Peggy Hayama, who sang the Japanese version of the song with lyrics written by Takashi Otowa, would retain a lifelong connection with Australia because…

    Bugger me, Bob!
