Go Go Australia Festival In Matsudo Stems Out Of A Friendship Grown From Seeds

A letter, a eucalyptus tree and 55 years of Australia–Japan connections

A schoolgirl asking for eucalyptus seeds might seem an unlikely beginning for an international relationship.

In 1958, a student at Matsudo Municipal Daigo Junior High School wrote to the Australian Embassy asking for eucalyptus seeds. The request was answered, and the relationship between Matsudo and what is now the City of Whitehorse in Melbourne gradually developed. In 1971, the two cities formally became sister cities.

In 2026, Matsudo and Whitehorse are celebrating 55 years of their sister-city relationship. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Japan–Australia Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.

Now that long relationship is bringing a distinctly Australian flavour to Matsudo.

The Matsudo Festival 2026 Go Go Australia Festival will take place around Matsudo Station on October 3 and 4.

Visitors will be able to encounter Australian food, coffee, wine, general goods and flowers. Aussie Beef steak bites will be freshly prepared by the Aussie Beef Mates PR ambassador, while an Aussie Lamb PR ambassador will also make an appearance.

This is where the festival becomes particularly interesting from a business perspective. It is not simply a tourism promotion. It is also an opportunity for people in Japan to encounter Australian food, products and lifestyle in their own neighbourhood. For Australian businesses and organisations interested in Japan, that kind of local connection can matter.

Japan–Australia business is often discussed in terms of major companies, investment and international trade. But international relationships can also grow through communities, schools, food and everyday encounters. The Matsudo–Whitehorse relationship is a good example.

What began with a student’s request for eucalyptus seeds developed into decades of student exchanges, cultural activities, community connections and official visits. Whitehorse City Council describes the relationship as the longest-running sister-city relationship in Victoria and one of the longest in Australia.

And now Australian beef, lamb, coffee, wine, flowers and other products will once again cross the Pacific — this time arriving in Matsudo for two days of food, culture and business.

A relationship that began with a few eucalyptus seeds has grown for 55 years. It is a useful reminder that small seeds can sometimes grow into something remarkably tall.

What Happened When Australia And Japan Met At The Olympics?

Sports Day is coming up, so it’s a good time to think that when Australia and Japan began celebrating 50 years of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in 2026, there was an obvious place to look for the story of their relationship: the Olympic Games. The two countries have met at Olympics in Melbourne, Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagano and Sydney, and will meet again when Brisbane hosts the Games in 2032. But the interesting stories are not really about medal tables. They are about swimmers who became rivals, athletes who became Japanese favourites, schoolchildren who adopted an Australian team, students who stayed connected across the pandemic, and even a…

Nissan Bluebird Oozui: When Australia (Briefly) Exported Cars to Japan

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Australia’s disastrous foray into exporting cars to Japan. For a brief period from 1989 to 1992, fully imported Bluebird Aussie cars made in Australia went on sale in Japan. The Bluebird Aussie was apparently the result of Nissan Australia’s Matilda Project, which had aimed to make a solely Australian car for Australian conditions, but ended up being a modified bluebird. Australia was, at the time, at the peak of its powers in the enormously fickle Japanese market. Thousands of Japanese tourists were flocking Down Under and Australia was on the verge of overtaking Hawaii (albeit very briefly as it turned out) as the…
