Whetted for Wet

Rain is falling pretty steadily and though the rainy season in Japan gets me down, on the verge of its start, the precipitation has whetted the garden’s appetite for the wet; at least for the onset of the season, which could go on for months, or not happen at all, as was the case last year.

Snow in the summer is starting to bloom, greeting our large lounge room window with a view of dainty white flowers.

Proteas, which had started with a bang in March then appeared to go dormant, have started to show signs of blooming, which would be bloomin’ marvelous, indeed, if they were to do so.

Kangaroo paw are thriving, whether they flower or not. (I keep hoping that I haven’t inflicted duds on too many people. It wasn’t intentional.)

Of course, the grevillea are magnificent!

Also bringing some delight is the banksia grown from seed this year, which is absolutely thriving. Up until this year we have struggled with banksia, but all in the garden are doing quite well now, which is pleasing because they are still the plant I regard as iconic of Australian flora.

Cop A Gander At These Rippers Too...

  • Banking On Banksia

Having caught the propagating bug last year, I’ve decided to try my hand at growing my own plants again in 2024, this time turning to the difficult proposition of raising banksias, the flower that most symbolizes Australian flora in my eyes. So far, my luck with banksias hasn’t been great, mainly thanks to ignorance and ill preparation to be fair. And impatience, perhaps? Kangaeroo Corner has a banksia that has grown well since it’s initial planting almost two years ago, but it has yet to flower for us. I expect it will do so one day. But I still want to see the banksia flowers in the garden. We bought…

  • Catching Covid

Well, what’s looking like a bleak time got bleaker as I caught covid and then shared it with Mrs. Kangaeroo. I isolated as soon as I realized something was wrong toward the end of the month. But it wasn’t enough to prevent the disease from spreading. I think allowing Dino to fly freely between us probably helped in transmitting the disease. At least I didn’t need to take any time off work, but Mrs. Kangaeroo wasn’t so lucky. Hope this isn’t a sign for the rest of the year.

  • Back Again!

Well, it’s been quite a while since we posted, but we’re back. It’s unlikely Kangaeroo.com will return to daily updates as had been the case for most of 2010 through 2014, but we will endeavor to be more active than in the past few years. Another significant change will be eliminating the emphasis on Japan and Australia. From now on, the site will just be about the day-to-day bullshit undertaken by the site owner. Cheers!

  • Icy Roads Raise Prospects Of An Icy Reception

Thanks to being as blind as a bat and leaving home in the dark, I didn’t realize how stupid I was until it was too late to do anything about it. And that ran the risks of some midwinter iciness. We had snow overnight, but I didn’t notice it, nor the icy roads, until I was already on my bike. Even when I was confident of my cycling skills, I never cycled on icy roads. Now, while terrified every time I get in the saddle, I was horrified to find myself rolling slowly through thee crunching ice. I was petrified by the thought that I may let down Mrs. Kangaeroo….

    豪キャブラリー: Footy
