Strolling Through The Centuries In The World’s Largest City

One of my great delights is that I get to work in an office located in the heart of Tokyo, the world’s largest city with a population of 37.4 million, and I’m never more than a few footsteps away from incredible historical highlight.

I got to spend my lunch break learning about Kamakura Bridge, which is located in Tokyo’s central Marunouchi district, and which I discovered bears the scars of the first sustained air raids the Americans unleashed during World War II.

There is a monument on the bridge noting that bullet marks remain from the November 1944 attack. The Americans would obliterate Tokyo in a series of sustained raids, killing hundreds of thousands and turning a huge part of the city into rubble.

Tokyo emerged from the ashes to become one of the world’s greatest cities. Just about every little nook in the metropolis has an interesting story about it.

Who Were the Japanese Divers Who Helped Build Broome?

ブルームの真珠産業を支えた日本人ダイバーとは The Japanese connection beneath the waves 海の底から始まった日豪のつながり Today, Broome in Western Australia is famous for its turquoise waters, red earth and South Sea pearls. But behind the town’s pearling history lies a remarkable Japanese connection, built by men who risked their lives working on the ocean floor. 西オーストラリア州のブルームといえば、青い海、赤い大地、そして南洋真珠で知られる。しかし、この町の真珠産業の歴史には、海底で命がけの仕事をした日本人たちが築いた、知られざる日豪のつながりがある。 By the late 1880s, Broome had become a major centre for the pearling industry. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had harvested shell for thousands of years, but as the industry moved into deeper waters, experienced divers from overseas became increasingly important. Many Japanese divers came from Wakayama Prefecture, where coastal communities had long traditions of fishing and diving. The…

Japan’s Crucial Role in Turning “Mad Max” into a Global Aussie Icon

Turning the clock back 40 years, Japan played a crucial role in giving Australia a leg-up toward becoming a player in the global movie industry. In late 1977, a couple of fledgling Australian filmmakers pooled their meager funds and shot a movie starring mostly unknown young actors and actual motorcycle gang members serving as extras. Almost two years later, Mad Max opened Australian theaters and became a steady, but controversial hit. The car action movie was immediately banned in New Zealand as some of its motorcycle gang violence resembled actual events in the market most closely resembling Australia’s. Australia’s movie industry was in the middle of a growing renaissance, backed…
