Down Under Cobbers On Top In Japanese Business

A longtime cobber contacted me this morning to let me know about a story of some of the Aussies doing roaring business in Japan; a market that can be tough to crack.

I’m not a businessperson, or even remotely entrepreneurial, but I’ve had the pleasure to get to know plenty of Aussies in Japan who have done remarkably well in the Japanese market.

Tracey Northcott is a superstar businessperson. I first met her in 2002 when she was running a cracking business centered on the then fledging field of mobile phones.

She has since gone from strength to strength, succeeding in one business after another, all while juggling a busy home life, too.

And she is unceasingly helpful and supportive. In one of the darkest times of my life, she threw herself in front of crowds to shield and protect me in an act I will never forget.

Also unforgettable is another good Aussie mate is Mick Lay, who I’ve known since the mid-1990s.

Mick’s another tireless trader who has gone from one level to the next across a number of industries and carved out a business empire for himself.

We’ve shared some great times together down through the years, especially as fellow supporters of the Richmond Tigers Australian Rules football team.

Another top Aussie businessperson I’m mates with is Kif Saint, proprietor of Punk Doily, which has the most authentically Australian foods in all of Japan.

That’s a bit of a misnomer, actually, because you are not going to get a meat pie in Australia that even comes close to what Punk Doily provides, with each dish a hearty meal on its own, making them absolutely perfect for this time of year.

Of course, plenty of other Aussies are making a great fist of business in Japan.

There’s even an Australia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan, which should come as no surprise given that Australia is one of Japan’s largest trading partners.

It’s a much more corporate organization than I’m connected with, but yet another example of Aussies making good here.

  • オーストラリアでの花見をお楽しむのが９月！

    南半球にあるオーストラリアの季節は日本と正反対であり、桜が咲いて「お花見」するのが4月頃でなく、９月辺りにやるんだ。 オーストラリアで「お花見」という習慣は元々ない。 だが、各地でさくらんぼが栽培され、チェリー農園が多いし、桜を見ないわけでもない。 そこで、在豪日本人コミュニティや親日家を中心に南半球の春にあたる９月にお花見をやることがあるだそうだ。 今年はまさにそうだ。 　９月２３日（日）にはメルボルンからおよそ４０キロ東の方へオリンダという町がある。そこに多数の桜の木もある「豪国立ツツジガーデン」がある。毎年、そこで「お花見」するそうだ。日本と違って、お祭りモードになったり、お騒ぎすることがないが、本当にお花を楽しむ。また、オーストラリアでは暴れる人が多いため多くの公の場が禁酒しているので、このガーデンもそうだから、お酒なしの花見となる。 日本のお花見と同じように出来ると思えば、がっかりするだろうが、その代わりに周辺にたくさん魅了的なものがある。 ガーデン自体がかなり美しい。 ガーデンのとなりにだれでもプレーできるゴルフ場があるが、一方神秘的なウィリアム・リッケッツ・サンクチュアリーがある。そこで綺麗な森の中に自然と一緒になっている彫刻が多数ある。山の上にもあるので、景色が良くて、メルボルン市内全部丸見える。 それでも足りなければ、ワイン産地であるヤラ・バレーも車で３０分以内にいける。 Hanami Cherry Blossom Festival

    Strewth! ABCが現役総理の国旗下のぬれ場を上映！！！

    オーストラリア公共放送局であるABCは、今夜（９月２１日）パロディ番組で現役総理のラブ・シーンを放送する予定であり、行為が国旗の下で行うことに対して大騒ぎとなっている。 　行為は、At Home With Juliaという番組の中で行う。同番組は現役総理大臣ジュリア・ギラード氏とそのパートナーであるティム・マセソン氏の官邸での私生活をパロディとして今年の８月から週１回放送されている。 　出る俳優たちが本人そっくりなので注目を浴びているが、今夜は総理とパートナーのオーストラリア国旗下のセックス・シーンがあるため保守系の政治家などを中心に激しく批判されている。 　肝心な総理本人は「テレビを見るより重要なことたくさんあるから」見ないようにする。

    煙の出方が間違っているBig Smoke

    　世界中喫煙者の肩身が狭くなっている中、オーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つは昔の喫煙時代を思い浮かばせるかもしれない。それはビクトリア州マートルフォード町にあるBig Smokeだ。 　Big Smokeは元々同町のあるタバコ工場の煙突でタバコに見えるように塗り替えて改造されたものだ。しかし、オーストラリアの禁煙運動が１９８０年代に入ってから非常に厳しくタバコ業界がだんだんやりにくくなった。そこで、数年前にBig Smokeがあった工場は経営が困難、タバコを製造しなくなった。 　しばらくの間工場が稼動していなくても煙突が大きなタバコに見えるままで続けた。これは未確認ですが、数年前同工場が粉を作るようになって煙突が塗り替えられて「Big Things」が一つなくなったらしい。 　Big Smokeの存在有無を別において、いずれにしてもちょっと変だった。Big Smokeのタバコのフィルターは、煙突の下部にあったので、煙が煙突から出てればタバコの反対側に火をつけたように見える。ま、オージーのおおらかさと言おう。 　ちなみに、全く違う意味のオージー英語Big Smokeがあり、この「Big Things」と勘違いないように気をつけてね。 Big smoke/都会 豪キャブラリ：　Big Smoke View Larger Map

    How’d Ya Shape An Aussie Garden In Suburban Tokyo?

    どうやってオーストラリアの一部を東京の郊外に？ Alex Endo, arguably Japan’s preeminent designer of Aussie gardens, carried out a remarkable transformation of our block in suburban Tokyo. Alex Endoは、日本で最も優れたオージーガーデンのデザイナーと言っても過言ではなく、東京郊外にある我が家の区画を見事に生まれ変わらせてくれた。 He planned several months in advance over the winter. When the spring came around, he had a selection of Australian native plants ready to go into the block. 彼は冬の間に数か月かけて綿密に計画を立て、春が訪れる頃には、区画に植えるためのオーストラリア原生植物をしっかり揃えていた。 How It Started Among the trees he planted in our back yard were a callistemon, a couple of species of grevillea, some myrtles and a banksia.     There’s Something Fishy About豪州の魚介類Big Things!

    　一昔前まで魚をはじめ魚介類は一般オーストラリア人の食生活にそれほど馴染めなかった。 　が、今ではお寿司（質のことを別に置いておいて）が昼食必需品などで決してそれはもう言えない。 　なので、オーストラリアの国のシンボルのひとつと言えるかもしれない「Big Things」に入っているのが不思議ではないだろう。 　完璧な例がビクトリア州とニューサウスウェルズ州の州境界となっているマレー川（オーストラリア最長川でもある）に存在するマレー・コッド像が観光町スワン・ヒルにある。 （駅そばに設置している魚像がちっと違和感を感じさせるかもしれないが、、、）。 Giant Murray Cod in Australia ちなみに、同町も19世紀で外輪船で有名だった上に、20世紀初期にオーストラリア初の米栽培が日本人が周辺で栽培した。 そこからさらに東方へ行って海岸に向かうとスノイ山脈がある。 そこにはニューサウスウェルズ州の小さな町アダミナビがある。 同町の主な産業が観光だ。 しかし、ちょっと面白い過去がある。 1950年代を中心に水力発電スノイ川ダム計画の一部としてアダミナビをはじめ四つの町が町ごと動かされた。 　オーストラリア唯一ノーベル文学書受賞者パットリック・ホワイト氏の初小説の舞台ともなった。 　が、これは余談。同町に「Big Things」がある！観光名所の理由ひとつが魚釣りだ。 そして、同地域のマスが「ますます」美味しいという評判だ。 なので、それを称えるのがBig Troutだ。ちなみ、この巨大マスのモデルとなったのは冷凍食品だったそうだ。 1973年制作、高さ10メートル重さ3トンで見事な魚。 　同州をさらに北部へ向かうともう一つのBig Troutもある。これがオベロンという町にあり、アダミナビ同様マス釣りが有名な町だ。 　そして、さらに北は飛んでいくとオーストラリア最北部にあるファーノースクィーンズランドがある。 同地域の最も大きな都市ケアンズにBig Marlinがある。 グレート・バリア・リーフやデイントリー地域などで有名なケアンズはカジキ類の聖地とも言えるので、そこで世界最大級なカジキが釣られた。 そのことを象徴として同市がBig Marlinという高さ約8メートルのカジキ像を建てた。　 　今までも考えRooの「Big Things」連載で他の魚や魚介類関係のオブジェを紹介した。 それはThe Big PrawnかファーノースクィーンズランドのBig Barramundi、南オーストラリアのBig LobsterとBig Oysterやビクトリア州のBig Yabby、Big AbaloneとBig Dead Fish。 　こんなに魚や魚介類がオーストラリア人の日常・非日常生活の中に溶け込んでれば海事大国といっても過言ではない。
