Why Does Australia’s National Food Cost Less In Japan Than It Does At Home?

Meat pies, Australia’s national dish, are cheaper in Japan (even though they’re made in Bairnsdale) than they are in Australia.

Tim Tams, too, up with Aussie Beef as a symbolic food from Down Under, sell in Tokyo for a fraction of the price that Aussie consumers pay for the bikkies.

I haven’t looked up the price of Australian beef, but I’d reckon there’s a good chance Japanese consumers have a world away are getting it cheaper than their Australian counterparts.

This is happening because there is a duopoly controlling Australian supermarkets, according to The Australia Institute, a public policy think tank. The Institute argues that Coles and Woolworths (Colesworth!), the two supermarket giants dominating the food retail market, act “as a barrier to new entrants and stronger competition. This in turn hurts consumers (through higher-than-necessary prices), farmers and other smaller food suppliers (through repressed purchase prices and other costly practices), and food retail workers (through suppressed wages, insecure work, and frequent instances of wage theft and other employment abuses), according to the Institute.

Coles and Woolworths built their domination by buying out independent competitors and repeated mergers and acquisitions over several decades. German supermarket chain Aldi has a 10% share of the Australian market, but it’s not enough to chip away at the stranglehold the big two players have. The Institute urges greater power to regulate M&A, break up companies in areas where competition is clearly being harmed and the right to investigate and publish data on pricing. And it argues for redistribution to consumers of excess profits.

Australians, like people in Japan, are going through a cost-of-living crisis. Last weekend, voters returned the Australian government to power in a landslide election win. It will be interesting to see if the government takes any action to address the duopoly. In the meantime, it’s a little strange that I’m paying 165 yen for a Four ‘N Twenty Angus Beef pie and 49 yen for a Tim Tam while my mates in Oz are forking out 291 yen per pie and 59 yen for a Tim Tam, based on the May 6 conversion rate. (AUD1=JPY93.02. All prices and conversion rate as of May 6, 2025).

What Is A Restaurant BYO? Imagine walking into a restaurant carrying a bottle of wine. In many countries, you’d be stopped at the door. In Australia? You might be thanked. A restaurant marked BYO means Bring Your Own alcohol. Many smaller restaurants don’t have a liquor licence. Instead of losing customers, they invite diners to bring their own beer or wine. The restaurant usually charges a small corkage fee to provide glasses and open the bottle. It’s a particularly popular tradition at family-run Asian restaurants, where bringing your favourite bottle has become part of the dining experience.

Ringo’s Ring-in, Awesome Aussie Anime Highlight the Fab Four’s Oz Oddities

Just as the Beatles created an iconic scene with their 1966 arrival in Tokyo wearing traditional Japanese happi coats, so too did the Fab Four make waves when they toured Australia two years earlier at the height of Beatlemania and establishing a quirky relationship with Down Under at the same time. Australia’s archetypical Beatles image features the Fab Four standing around while holding didjeridoos, an indigenous Australian instrument that Ringo Starr on the far left of the picture appears to be tackling with greater fervour than bandmates Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison. It’s a great pic, but the only problem is that Ringo’s involvement in the…

Thongs

Big Pelicans
