恐竜だったことを思わせる豪巨鳥を称えるBig Cassowary

　ダチョウ、エミューに次ぐ世界三番目大きいな鳥カソワリがクィーンズランド州北部ミッション・ビーチという町でオーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つとして同鳥を称えるBig Cassowaryがある。
　Big Cassowaryの高さが約５メートルであり、本物の2.5倍ぐらいだ。カソワリは飛べない鳥であり、雑食性である。頭の上にヘルメットのような角があり、動きも食習慣も恐竜と鳥との繋がりを強く思わせてくれるだろう。
　ミッション・ビーチにBig Cassowaryが作られている理由は同町周辺がカソワリの生息地であるためだ。
　オーストラリアの子供たちには「カソワリが危ないぞ！」とよく言われ、人間を攻撃すると言われるし、この鳥の目付きも評判も「怖い」。が、実際に人間を攻撃した事件が記録上で僅か１件しかなく、それでも約90年前のことだった。Wikipediaによるとカソワリが本当に内気な鳥であるが人間などに恐れがあると感じれば自己防衛として攻撃して来るんだという。生息地の損失や人間が手で食べさせるため森から死の原因となる車などを接触する可能性が高くなることを理由にカソワリが絶滅危機にあり、オーストラリアで保護されている。
