    　　西オーストラリア州ブランズィック・ジャンクションという町は大自然の中の小さな町であり、一番近い都市パースが１５０キロ以上離れているが、不思議と豪州独特な「Big Things」と日本に何らかの繋がりがある。 　ブランズィック・ジャンクションの人口は約８００人しかないが、同町の中に大きな乳製品工場がある。そこでオーストラリア全国で愛されているピーターズ・アイス・クリームが作られている。しかし、そのピーターズ・アイス・クリームも日本に輸出することがあり、日本ではレディーボーデンとして販売された（アメリカのボーデン社委託で）。 　そこで、「Big Things」との関係が生まれて来る訳だ。町の存在が乳製品と深く関わるため、デカイ牛像を作ることになった。（他の「Big Things」同様、理由が良く分からないが、それはキッチュを異様に高く評価する国民性と言おう、、、。）Cow on the Cornerは、長さ５メートルと高さ１．５メートルであり１９７３年にブランズィック・ジャンクションで建てられた。 　Cow on the Cornerは、「Big Things」の中では小さい方だ。実は、オーストラリアの「Big Things」の中西オーストラリア州のものが最も小さく、最も地味、最もオリジナリティが欠けていると言っても過言ではない。皮肉的に同州の面積がオーストラリア７つの州の中では一番デカイ、というと余談だよね。 大きな地図で見る ピーターズ・アイス・クリームの各製品

    Big PineappleがDaggy文化のキッチュ・キングかも、、、

    なんだかんだ言っても多くのオーストラリア人がやけにdaggy、要するにダサいもの、を非常に高くすると言っていいと思う。その現れの一つがオーストラリアの「Big Things」であるかもしれない。全国各州に渡ってほとんどの場合全く意味がないがデカイ、キッチュな彫刻などが所々で作られている。 　その「Big Things」の始まりがクィーンズランド州ナンボー町にあるビッグ・パイナップルである。 　ビッグ・パイナップルは1971年に観光を推進するためにナンボー町のある牧場に立てられた。クィーンズランドが熱帯地であり、パイナップルをはじめ熱帯地果物業が盛んだ。開設当時、高さ16メートルのパイナップル彫刻しかなかったが行こう、乗り物かレストランやお土産やなどを建設して、同州の人気観光スポットの一つとなった。 　しかし、2000年代に入ったら経営が悪化し、2009年に倒産した。が、新しい経営者が現れ、リフォームし昨年再び営業開始となった。 　オーストラリア国内だけでは「Big Things」が約150件あると言われ、ビッグ・パイナップルがその中で初期頃に建てられ、その後のキッチュ大国に大きく貢献した。 View Larger Map Big Pineapple Official Website The Big Pineapple (Wkipedia)
