Big PineappleがDaggy文化のキッチュ・キングかも、、、

なんだかんだ言っても多くのオーストラリア人がやけにdaggy、要するにダサいもの、を非常に高くすると言っていいと思う。その現れの一つがオーストラリアの「Big Things」であるかもしれない。全国各州に渡ってほとんどの場合全く意味がないがデカイ、キッチュな彫刻などが所々で作られている。
　その「Big Things」の始まりがクィーンズランド州ナンボー町にあるビッグ・パイナップルである。

　ビッグ・パイナップルは1971年に観光を推進するためにナンボー町のある牧場に立てられた。クィーンズランドが熱帯地であり、パイナップルをはじめ熱帯地果物業が盛んだ。開設当時、高さ16メートルのパイナップル彫刻しかなかったが行こう、乗り物かレストランやお土産やなどを建設して、同州の人気観光スポットの一つとなった。
　しかし、2000年代に入ったら経営が悪化し、2009年に倒産した。が、新しい経営者が現れ、リフォームし昨年再び営業開始となった。
　オーストラリア国内だけでは「Big Things」が約150件あると言われ、ビッグ・パイナップルがその中で初期頃に建てられ、その後のキッチュ大国に大きく貢献した。

    芸術が盛んな田園町飲屋屋上「偉大死んだ魚」

    　ある意味ではオーストラリアの「Big Things」すべてが国民性と言われてもいいほど盛んである自嘲なユーモアの表れだと思う。 しかし、その中ではビクトリア州の人口数百人しかない田園風な町フィッシュ・クリークでは特に自嘲的なユーモアが溢れている「Big Things」がある。 それはBig Dead Fish（そうだよ、、、大きな死んだ魚という意味）だ。 　町の中心となるフィッシュ・クリーク・ホテルの屋上に巨大なボラの死体オブジェが設置してある。 　フィッシュ・クリーク在住のアーティストが多く、町の名前にかけている作品がたくさん披露されている。町にあるビル全部が何らかの形で魚関係の物を飾っているらしい。 大きな地図で見る

    元々祭りの山車だった違う州２つのBig Pelicans

    　オーストラリアの「Big Things」の中にはBig Pelicanが二つあるが、数千キロ離れても両ビッグ・ペリカンが共通するところがたくさんある。 　南オーストラリア州ロクストンにあるBig Pelicanとクイーンズランド州ヌーサのBig Pelicanのいずれも1970年代に祭りの山車として使われるため作られた。 　以降、両Big Pelicanが数回パレードなどにあっちこっちによく登場したが、結局永遠に設置するようになったが、今でもヌーザ版が移動式であり、使おうと思えば出来るという。 　ヌーサは、そもそも観光地であるので、「Big Things」があってもおかしくない地域。同町のBig Pelicanは、同名のボート貸し出し会社前の公園に設置されている。 　一方、ロクストンは農業地域にあり、オーストラリアの最も長い川マレー川を面している静かな町だ。 　ロクストン版のBig Pelicanもいたずらで川に流されたことがあったが、結局無事に回収できた。 　いずれのBig Pelicanが波乱万丈があったが、今では「Big Things」としてきちんと評価され、愛されているようになっている。
