Recce Turned Out To Be More Of A Wrecky
My sense of direction is so bad that even in the simplest of routes where it is nigh impossible to get lost I will invariably find a way. That’s the only way I seem to be able to find. And my talent for doing this is extraordinary. Fully cognizant of this, for some bewildering reason I volunteered to lead a company bike ride along an unfamiliar route following the Kanda River to encourage people to take up cycling. I did this because riding has been so beneficial for me physically, mentally and spiritually. So I was determined to get the route right. I plotted out the route turn-by-turn on Google…
May It Always Be May
May is gorgeous in Japan, even this year when the world is confronting the bleak tragedy of the covid-19 outbreak. The warm, dry, mostly sunny month brings some much-needed delight.
Dino’s Might Is Dynamite!
By all rights, we should have lost Dino months ago, but our rosy faced lovebird is a fierce fighter, and combined with the dedication and devotion of Mrs. Kangaeroo, she is in bright spirits and doing well. Dino still can’t poop, which means that each day is potentially her last. X-rays and CAT scans failed to determine what was blocking her insides. Vets have not suggested operating. Whatever medicine she is taking to help her is not effective, though her steadfast refusal to take the treatment have done nothing to help. It seemed a couple of weeks ago that she may be on the path back to a complete recovery,…

日本人男性が育てたオーストラリアのある言語 Japanese people living in far northwestern Australia played a crucial role in development and use of an Australian language. オーストラリア北西部で暮らしていた日本人たちが、あるオーストラリアの言語の発展に大きな役割を果たしていた――そんな事実が改めて注目されている。 Mostly male pearl divers, the Japanese people who lived in and around Broome in the late 19th to early 20 centuries influenced the Broome Pearling Lugger Pidgin. 19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて、主に男性の日本人真珠潜り師たちが多く暮らしていたブルーム周辺では、「ブルーム・パーリング・ラッガー・ピジン」と呼ばれる言語が使われていた。 Broome Pearling Lugger Pidgin is named for the lugger boats used in the pearling industry around Broome, which was booming at the start of the 20th century. The pidgin is Malay-based, but had a strong Japanese tinge, as well as incorporated English and various Indigenous Australian languages. このピジン語はマレー語をベースに、英語や先住民の諸言語が混ざり合い、さらに強い“日本語の風味”が加わっていた。 The industry attracted a diverse number of ethnicities and people groups, including, Malays,…
