Australian English
G’day is the typical Australian greeting, used at any time of the day or night upon meeting another person. It is arguably the most famous example of Australian English. G’day is an abbreviation of “good day,” an old form of greeting in all forms of English.

  • Heaps, And Why Aussies Turn A Noun Into “So Much Of It”

    An Aussie tradie looks at a client’s renovation quote and says, “Nah mate, that’s heaps too dear.” No hills or piles of anything are involved. So, what is “heaps” actually doing in that sentence? オージーの職人がリフォームの見積もりを見て「Nah mate, that’s heaps too dear（いや、それめっちゃ高いよ）」と言う。山も丘も出てこない。では、この “heaps” は一体何をしているのだろう？ Heaps in Strine means “a lot” or “many” as a noun (“heaps of tourists”), and, more distinctively, it’s used as an intensifier meaning “very” or “extremely” (“heaps good,” “thanks heaps”). It’s one of the most flexible words in everyday Strine, slotting in anywhere “really” or “a lot” would go in standard English.     オージー英語で使う場合はmickey mouseは当然ディズニー関係もあるがそれとともに「ダメ」とか「粗悪品」などのような感覚もある。「良質」や「一流品」以下の意味である。 　なぜこうなっただろう？ 　皮肉的にオージー英語のmickey mouseはある意味では米語のgoofyと同様な意味である。英語って複雑すぎるよね！

    　　車について言うと、多くのオーストラリア人が勘違いをしていることがある。 　豪国産車とされているHoldenは実際には車メーカー歴９０年に及ぶその殆どは米ジェネラル・モーターズ（GM)の豪支社としてであった。しかし同社が１９４８年に初めて１００パーセント豪州デザイン・製造車を発売したのは事実である。そして、間違いないのはピックアップトラックの発明だ。そのきっかけとなったのはビクトリア州のある農夫が「月曜日に教会まで乗って行き、その後豚を積み市場へ運べるような車が欲しい」とフォード社オーストラリア支社に依頼の手紙を寄せた事だ。そして、それに対して同社は見事に応え、以降、世界中に同デザインの車が起用されたが、当時のデザイン、車種名を保っているのはオーストラリアと隣国ニュージーランドだけである。UteはUtilityの略だ。英語圏の他の国ではオーストラリア発のuteをpick up truckと呼んでいる。

    豪キャブラリー：Mollycoddle

    厳密に言えば、mollycoddleはオージー英語独特な言葉ではないが、オージー英語ではよく使われているので、ここに豪キャブラリーのひとつとして入れさせていただいた。 　Mollycoddleは「人を甘える」という意味である、あまり良い感じを与える言葉ではない。受動態で甘えん坊に対して批判的な使い方が最も多いだろう。例えば、Hughesy’s bloody useless ‘coz he’s been mollycoddled from birth（ヒュージー＜人＞は、生まれてからmollycoddleされたため、つかいものにならんだ」。
