    There are plenty of ways to say someone is in good nick, but Strine has never been particularly interested in leaving a perfectly good bull out of the conversation. Tell someone they’re as “fit as a mallee bull” and you are saying they are in extremely good shap, strong and healthy. The image comes from the Mallee, the dry inland country where mallee eucalypts grow. A bull tough enough to survive out there was imagined as a pretty robust bit of cattle.     Movember: オーストラリアが世界に与えた男性健康促進用チャリティ運動

    　オーストラリア人数人が半分冗談で始まったチャリティ活動により11月は英語でNovemberで言わなくなりつつであり、Movemberとなるかもしれない。 　Movemberの「mo」はmoustache（唇ひげ）が由来。 約10年前オーストラリアで（具体的な場所の説が別れているが、、、）数人の男たちが11月になったらスポンサーを集めて唇ひげをそらないで、髭を伸ばして競争して得たお金をチャリティに寄付する事になった。 活動の目的は女性に比べて人命が短い男性に健康意識を持つように呼びかける。 　Movemberは2006年ごろまでオーストラリアのみの活動だったが、以降ニュージーランドか南アフリカをはじめ、いまで北欧・北米など世界中に広がっている。 　　日本は、、、まだだね。でも、時間の問題かな？ 　今年、カンタス航空も早速Movemberに積極的に参加し、オーストラリア国内線の飛行機などに髭をつけて飛んでいる。 Movember

    ボクシングをやるビッグ・ワニ

    　一昔前オーストラリアと言えば「ワニ」と思い浮かぶ人が居るかもしれない。１９８０年代ではあの有名なオーストラリア映画「クロコダイル・ダンディー」が日本を含めて世界中に大ヒットした上に、日本ではあまりなじまなかったがアメリカを中心にワニ・ハンター故スティーブ・アーウィン氏が１９９０年代後半から２００年代の半ば頃の間一世風靡をした。なのに、オーストラリア最北部の近くに違う形のビッグ・スターワニの存在もある。それはビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルであるのだ。 　ビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルは、オーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つである。高さ・長さいずれも８メートルの巨大ワニは、「Big Things」らしく特定な役割がまったくないが、一応ガソリン・スタンドの近くにあり、世界遺産であるカカドゥ国立公園へ行く道の途中でもある。 ビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルはオーストラリア北部のノーザン・テリトリー州に１９８０年代に作られて、現在多くの観光客にとってほぼ他に何もないところの唯一の思い出となるかもしれない、、、 View Larger Map
