English is now Australia’s most commonly used language, but there are also still dozens of indigenous Australian languages that are native tongues for many people living Down Under. And many indigenous Australian languages have for tens of thousands of years used sign language as well, the most famous example being that used in the Warlpiri language used in the remote central Australian desert, centering on the community of Yuendumu. Including the Warlpiri, these sign languages are often the result of taboo practices, where custom forbids certain members of tribes speaking to other members. The sign languages developed as an alternative to verbal communication. Many Warlpiri speakers and…
Aussie voters in Tokyo will be able to snag a democracy sausage if they go to the Australian Embassy in Tokyo from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2, according to the Embassy website. Australia is one of the few countries that make voting mandatory, which I believe…
Australian English accents don’t really have regional differences. Somebody in Perth in the far southwest will sound reasonably similar to someone from Townsville in the far northeast, over 6,000 kilometers away. Considering the area involved – Australia is 26 times bigger than Japan – it’s amazing.
