豪キャブラリー： Kindie

オーストラリアではオージー英語らしくいうと、littliesがschooliesになる前にkindieに通う子供が多い。要するに、小さい子供たちが小学校に入学する前に幼稚園（kindergarten）に通う。ということはkindieの意味が簡単にわかるだろう？そうだ、、、その通り。Kindieはkindergartenの省略、オージー英語らしく省略言葉だ。ちなみに、厳密に言えばschooliesは高校を課程終了後・卒業する前の間に行う大規模なパーティであり、各地で行い近年では大きな観光ビジネスにもなっている。

  • なぜDog’s Balls（ドッグズ・ボールズ）はBarking Madにさせる？

    オーストラリア人はなぜこんな表現を使うの？ 最初にお断りしておきます。 品のいい表現ではありません。 でも、オーストラリアでは意外によく耳にします。 Dog’s balls は、 「ものすごく分かりやすい」「誰が見ても明らか」 という意味の俗語です。 由来は……そのままです。 犬を見れば、雄か雌かは一目瞭然。 そこから、 “It’s as obvious as dog’s balls.” という表現が生まれました。 意味は、 「そんなの見れば分かるでしょ。」 というニュアンスです。 要注意：激似イギリス英語のDog’s bollocksと勘違いしないでくださいね。Dog’s bollocksの由来が全く同じですが、それが「最高！」「これ以上良いものない」ような意味であり、ストラインのdog’s ballsとかなり意味合いがずれています。 意味 非常に明白であること。 The Scale Of Roo-dness 🦘🦘🦘☆☆ 少し下品ですが、強い悪口ではありません。 フォーマルな場では避けましょう。 例文 It’s as obvious as dog’s balls. 「そんなの見れば分かるよ。」 日本語では？ 「火を見るより明らか」 「見え見え」＾＠＠ 「誰が見ても分かる」 オージー英語（ストライン）には、思わず笑ってしまう比喩がたくさんあります。少々品がなくても、ユーモアを忘れないところがオージーらしさなのかもしれません。

It is registered as a residential support service for people with intellectual, mental, or physical disabilities. It’s hard to track down information on this Kangaroo House, a name given to many organizations in Japan, and I don’t know why it chose a kangaroo as the symbol of its group home services, caring for residents with various disabilities and providing daily life support.     豪で最も雨が降る町は巨大ゴールデン・ゴムブーツ賞を（勝手に）受賞

    　ゴールデン・ゴムブーツ賞はオーストラリア最北部にあるタリー、イニスフェールとビビンダという三つの小さな町が競争する賞であり、最も多く雨が降る町が受賞される、、、 　、、、が、ビビンダが約４０年間に渡りほぼ毎年降雨がオーストラリア一にも関わらず、タリーの行動力が良く勝手に雨に関する「Big Things」でありゴールデン・ゴムブーツを２００３年に作成し、今同町の立派な観光スポットとなっている。 　ゴールデン・ゴムブーツの７．９メートルもある高さは同町の年間降雨記録だった１９５０年の意味も示す。なお、同地域が絶滅危機にあるイエアメガエルの繁殖地でもあり、その存在をゴールデン・ゴムブーツにも認められている。 　毎年、タリーがゴールデン・ゴムブーツフェスティバルも開催する。 View Larger Map

  • We Are Not Emus-ed

    Emus are huge, flightless birds endemic to Australia. They’re also featured on the country’s coat of arms, together with the kangaroo, with both creatures selected because they are physically incapable of taking a step backward, meaning they can only advance. Emus are one of Australia’s myriad glorious birds and trail only the ostrich as the world’s largest birds. They’re also capable of running up to 50 km/h! The link with dinosaurs also becomes pretty obvious just by looking at these creatures. Emus are also known to have controlled the late British comedian Rod Hull.
