　なんだかんだ言ってもオーストラリアはギャンブル大国だ。一昔前まで競馬のメルボルンカップのために祭日があるぐらい。そして、オージー同士は壁に登って歩いている2匹のハエのどっちが先に屋根まで登れるかにまで賭けるぐらい賭け事に熱心と言われている。カジノも多くてくじも多様あるので、賭け事は国にとって重要な税収源となっている。そこで、scratchyというくじが出てきて、これは日本のスクラッチと全く同じであり、この種のくじの生まれ親でもある。

    It’s A Long Way To The Shop If Ya Wanna Sausage Roll

    CNN reported globally that a 7-year-old boy lost overnight in a forest near the South Australian capital of Adelaide was saved by a kangaroo.     豪有数標高が高いけど沈んでいる奇妙な山村

    　世界レベルで見ればオーストラリアが高い山がないが、東海岸の数千キロに渡りグレートディバイディング山脈という山脈があり、その一部がとっても不思議な山村が所在するスノウィー山脈もある。　昔オーストラリアで最も標高高い不思議な四つ小さな山村があったが、いずれも比較的に高い山に所在していたにも関わらずいずれも今水沈まれている。　「ええ？高い標高山村が下方向に流れるはずの水に沈まれる訳がない」と一瞬思ったらおかしくないが、原因は日本でもよく見る現象だ、、、ダムづくり。　ジンダバイン、タルビンゴ、タランガッタとアダミナビという山村が水力発電所建設計画だったスノウィー山脈水力発電所計画で沈没され、今同名の各村が元の場所とかなり離れている所にある。日本のような山が多い国ではちっとも珍しくない話だが、山が低くて割と平野が中心となっているオーストラリアでは極めて珍しい話だった。今では干ばつがあれば、古い町も再び現れてきたり、スキーの拠点となったりして、観光業に大きく観光業に貢献している。ちなみに、アダミナビには「Big Things」であるBig Troutがある。下記の映画が古いアダミナビの今を見るものだ。　スノウィー山脈水力発電所計画は1949年から1974年の間に続けた。ダム16ヶ所、水力発電所7ヶ所、トンネルやパイプなど225キロメートルに及び、オーストラリア最大土木インフラ計画だった。　同計画の建設にかかわった労働者約7割が移民だった。1950年代まで移民にかなり否定的なオーストラリアが英国植民地化した1788年以降初めて英語圏外の大量移民を受け入れて現在の多文化社会の出発点と呼ばれ、現代オーストラリアにはかり知らないほど大きく影響を与えたプロジェクトだった。 Our Drowned Town from George Evatt on Vimeo.
