豪キャブラリー： Telly
インターネットの普及前にはおそらくtellyが世界最大の通信媒体となっていただろう。人々が行けない世界を茶の間に持ってきてくれたものだった。もちろん、tellyがtelevisionの省略だ。厳密に言えば、tellyは独特なオージー英語ではなく、イギリス英語であり、北米以外の英語圏ではよく使われている。 ちなみに、教育などを助長しながらも、レベルが低い番組も多く、テレビは俗語でidiot box（おバカ箱という意味）とも呼ばれている。
「やばいリンガル」Feral （野生的）
米・英語で普通に使っている言葉がオージー英語になるといきなり意味がまったく違ってくることがたまにある。Feralという言葉がそう。どのように違うのかは続けて読めば分かる。 Meanings of words can change suddenly when moving from English spoken in other countries to Strine. Let’s see what happens with feral.

故英国首相ウィンストン・チャーチル氏は、イギリスとアメリカが「共通の言葉で分かれている二つの国家」という名言を残したが、ルーツが同じでも使う英語が違うオーストラリアではさらに言葉の誤解を招きやすい。今日の豪キャブラリーであるthongがその典型的な例だ。オージーにとってthongsが夏に欠かせないものとなっている。しかし、それをアメリカ人に言ったら、驚かれるだろう。オージー英語ではthongsはビーチサンダルのことを示すが米語のthongはセクシーな下着であるＴ－バックのことだ。
