Crookは英語圏のほかの国では泥棒や悪者という意味だけど、オージー英語では同じ意味がある上に「病気」「具合が悪い」や「気持ち悪い」という意味もある。 なぜこういう意味になったのかが不明だがおそらく悪者の悪と気持ち悪いの悪いが由来ではないだろうか。

What Is A Restaurant BYO? Imagine walking into a restaurant carrying a bottle of wine. In many countries, you’d be stopped at the door. In Australia? You might be thanked. A restaurant marked BYO means Bring Your Own alcohol. Many smaller restaurants don’t have a liquor licence. Instead of losing customers, they invite diners to bring their own beer or wine. Strine（オージー英語）を生んだ親
Afferbeck Lauder氏はストライン（オージー英語）の父と言っても過言ではない。 1950年代から1960年代にかけてまでほとんどのオーストラリア人が自国が英国帝国の一部として見て、イギリスと親密感があった。オージー英語の特殊さ及び独特な味を誇りに思うより、恥ずかしがる人が多かった（これは別の話し後日にお話しするが、この現象がcultural cringe< 文化的従属的姿勢＞という）。
