A Little-Known, Bizarre Australia-Japan Christmas Story

Dec. 25, the original date of this post, is Christmas Day, but Christmas also gives its name to an island with a little-known — and bizarre — role in Australia-Japan relations.

そして、大日本帝国海軍のクリスマス島占領について面白いハプニングがあった。
It was long thought the island would be targeted because of its rich phosphate deposits.
Indeed, the Imperial Japanese Navy headed to the island in March 1942. The Allied troops defending Christmas Island realized they were outnumbered by an overpowering force, dismantled the island’s defenses and raised a white flag of surrender. The Japanese, however, sailed away. Once again, the Allies raised the Union Jack.
クリスマス島はリン酸塩が豊富であり、そのため開戦まもなく連合軍が日本軍の攻撃を期待していた。案の定、1942年３月大日本帝国海軍が同島を近づいた。連合軍が勝ってない相手として見なして降伏するために白旗を揚げたが日本帝国海軍が反応しなくその場を去った。不思議がっていても連合軍が再びユニオン・ジャックを揚げた。
Days later, though, members of the British Indian force mutinied, overpowered and killed their British officers and interred the remaining Europeans on Christmas Island. The Indian mutineers then invited the Imperial Japanese forces to take over the island, which they did under the command of Rear-Admiral Shoji Nishimura.
　だが、数日後、連合軍のインド系の軍人が氾濫を起し、イギリス人司令官を殺し、オーストラリア人などヨーロッパ系の人々を監禁した。そして、大日本帝国海軍を呼びかけて、西村祥治海軍中将下で占領が始まった。

Sabotage by workers ensured Japan gained little phosphate and it soon withdrew all but a token force from Christmas Island, which was handed to Australia to govern following Japan’s defeat in World War II. Australia continues governing Christmas Island through to today.
しかし、労働者のサボタージュなどによる、結局リン酸塩取得量がほとんどなく数人の兵士を除き、すぐクリスマス島から去った。日本の敗戦後クリスマス島がオーストラリア領土となり、今でもその状態が継続している。

    Goodbye Possums…

    Barry Humphries, the creator of characters such as Dame Edna Everage – the Moonee Ponds housewife famous for her flamboyance and shouted greeting of “Hello Possums” – Sir Les Patterson and Sandy Stone, and himself an entertainer and icon of Straya in many parts of the world, has passed away. Humphries died aged 89 on Saturday following complications from a recent hip surgery. Personally, I wasn’t a great fan of the Moonee Ponds housewife — Dame Edna Average is my name for her — but she had her moments and was a wonderful example of Humphries’ acerbic, anti-Establishment wit that Australian author Kathy Lette described this morning as his brilliance…

    豪国民食と言われているVegemiteが90周年を祝う！

    「国家を静止するレース」：競馬のための祝日

    Fiorente wins the 2013 Melbourne Cup[/caption]　 先日、日本が「文化の日」があり、祝日となったが、今日（5日）は、オーストラリアが祝日だ。ある意味同じような文化の日を祝っていると言えるかもしれないが、オーストラリアの場合、その「文化」が競馬だ！ 　世界中にG1レースが大体100件ある中半分以上日本で開催され、間違いなく日本が競馬大国となっている。しかし、日本でも競馬のために祝日がない。 　だが、オーストラリアでは11月第一火曜日は「メルボルン・カップ・デー」とし、開催地フレミントン競馬場があるメルボルン市内が休日となっている。他州など、仕事があってもレースが開始する午後2時40分からの数分間ほぼ全国の人々が競馬を見て大盛り上がり。よっぽどのことじゃない限り、同レースを見て、職場などで掛け合う習慣があり、全国のほぼ全員の注目を浴びる。あまりにも影響が大きくメルボルン・カップは「国家を静止するレース」と呼ばれている。 　日本がメルボルン・カップと面白い歴史がある。初めて参戦したのは2005年だった。アイ・ポッパーが12着で終わった。しかし、翌年、3200メートル日本馬デルタ・ブルースとポップ・ロックが圧倒的に強く1・2着で争い、デルタ・ブルースが見事に優勝した。 　しかし、その直後、オーストラリアで「馬インフルエンザ」が発生し、日本馬のせいとされ入国制限が一層厳しくなった。以降、2010年のトウカイ・トリック以外、日本馬がレースしていない。 追伸：2013年メルボルン・カップが５日午後行ない、初女性調教師としてゲイ・ウォーターハウス氏のフィオレンテ（Fiorente）が優勝した！ Fiorente hands Waterhouse historic Melbourne Cup triumph
