豪のクリスマス・ソング：Aussie Jingle Bells

Animals　オーストラリア版のジングル・ベルがあったのは知ったか？あるんだよ！
　「ジングル・ベル」が雪の中のソリを乗っている話だが、真夏のクリスマスがあるオーストラリアでは雪もソリもない（実は、いずれもあるが、それだと話がうまくまとまらないので、とりあえず、別に置いておこう。）
　オージー版のジングル・ベルズは田舎道で走る豪産者ホールデン社のピックアップ・トラックの話。
　先日考えRooで掲載されたDeck the Shedの作詞・作曲バッコ＆チャンプスことグレグ・チャンピオン氏とコリン・ビュキャノン氏の作品だ。

  • Turn it up

    “Turn it up” in Strine means to be quiet, or be reasonable, or can also be a request to cease conversation. ストラインには、「Turn it up」が静かにしなさいか、融通を利くや会話を止める合図だ。

    「やばいリンガル」　Flick　（人と縁を切る）

    　オージー英語はユニークな使い方がある場合が多い。たとえ他の国の英語では同じ言葉でもオージー英語の場合の意味が完全に違うこともある。Flickは、本来の英語ではflick（軽くたたくこと）という意味だが、オージー英語ではどうだろう？

    Big Thingsと妖精ペンギンが溢れる小さな島

    ビクトリア州州都メルボルン市からおよそ140キロ離れているフィリップ島は「妖精ペンギン」と呼ばれている小型ペンギンのパレードか美しい自然風景やオートバイ・クランプリー開催地などで世界中にかなり知られてあり、観光名所の位置づけが確定している。 　そろほど良く知られていないのは同島が実際にオーストラリアを象徴する「Big Things」も数多くあり、「Big Things」都と言われてもおかしくないほどだ。 　面積100平方ｋｍしかない同島には、なんと４つもの「Big Things」がある。 　そして、フィリップ島とメルボルンを繋がる道路沿えにバスというところでさらに一件がある。 　すごいと言えばすごいだけど、存在する理由が未だに分からない。 　ま、それをべつにおいておいて、どの「Big Things」があるのか見てみよう。 　まず、以前に紹介したBig Koalaがある。これが実際に数少ない野生コアラが見える公園の正面入り口にあり、フリップ島カウズ町にある。 　また、カウズにあるのがBig Tapという巨大蛇口。「蛇口」を称える理由は？と言われたら答えられないが、一応同オブジェがキッチュなテーマ・パークの看板となっている。 　ちょっと分かりづらいかもしれないがちょっと違うカウズがカウズ近くにあるニューヘーブンに見つけられる。 　これがBig Cows（カウズ）というデカイ牛だ（これれについて別の機会お話しするね。） 　さらに同じ町にBig Waveがある。 　フィリップ島は有名なサーフィン地域であるので、なんとなくこのオブジェがそのことを称えているじゃないかな？ 　このデカイ波彫刻がカフェ前に設置されている。 　そして、見飽きてなければ、フリップ島近くにあるバス町（これも以前に考えRooで取り上げたことがあるよね、、、）。

  • 豪に居れば、豪に「詩違え」：どんなオージーでも知っているポエムが作り変えられる

    　日本人誰でもが宮沢賢治氏氏の「雨にも負けず」を学ぶように、オーストラリアの子供たちがドロシア・マッケラー氏の「マイ・カントリー」（「我が国」）を学校で必ず勉強する。 　マッケラー氏が１９歳で１９０４年にイギリスでホームシックとなった時に作詩し、以降母国のオーストラリアで広く知られるようになる。 　今でも一般にハイ・カルチャーが決して浸透していると言い難いオーストラリアでは少なくともこの詩ぐらいなら誰でも知っていると言っていいと思う。 　そして、あのウィーン少年合唱団が来月オーストラリアへツアーする予定であり、それを先駆けて「マイ・カントリー」を作曲し歌うことになっている。 「マイ・カントリー」（皆が知っている所。実際に全詩がもっと長い！）と日本語訳が以下の通り。 ウィーン少年合唱団「マイ・カントリー」（「我が国」） Vienna Boys Choir loves a sunburnt country

    Japan’s Fans Still Go Mad For Australia’s Most Successful Film Franchise

    One of the most outstanding characteristics I have found of many Japanese people in almost four decades of living here is that it is highly common for fun to be taken very seriously, indeed. One area where I have seen that trait on display comes with the franchise related to Mad Max, whose five movies dating from 1979’s Mad Max to Furiosia: A Mad Max Saga in 2024 make it the most successful Australian cinematic series in history. In fact, had it not been for avid fans in Japan, the franchise would probably not have continued past the first entry, but Mad Max has also given back to Japan, inspiring…
