It’s the third consecutive year the Lucky Country has topped the OECD’s Better Life Index.

    Big Thingsのはずなのに遥かに本物より小さいのBig Ayers Rock

    　ニューサウスウェールズ州にある小さな町キャルアはオーストラリアの象徴一つであるウルル（旧名エアズ・ロック）の「Big Things」版の置かれている所である。 　このBig Ayers Rockは、本物のウルルの４０分の一の大きさであり、他の「Big Things」と違って実際のモデルとなっている物より大きいじゃないくて小さいであることによってちょっとユニークだ。 　またユニークなところがオーストラリア独特なダサイ文化象徴の位置づけ。このBig Ayers Rockが元々Leyland Brothers Worldというオーストラリアのアウトバックをテーマにした遊園地にあった。 　遊園地を経営したのはマイクとメル・レーランド兄弟。このレーランド兄弟が１９７０年代から１９８０年代にかけてオーストラリアのテレビで大人気のドキュメンタリ番組を作成した兄弟だった。 　ドキュメンタリー作りが決してプロらしいと言いがたいが彼らの番組がオーストラリアの砂漠や大自然の紹介などによって数多くの都会に住むオーストラリア人にとって初めて自分たちのアウトバックを見ることが出来る。当時、番組を見たテーマ・ソングを覚える人が多いはずだ。番組がオーストラリアテレビの伝説的な存在となっていると言っても過言ではないと思う。 　しかし、１９９０年代にオープンした遊園地が間もなく経営悪化し、結局兄弟が倒産し、遊園地を閉鎖した。遊園地にあったBig Ayers Rockは近くのレストランに売ってそのレストランの屋根に飾るようになった。遊園地自体が別の会社に買収され、今でもグレート・オージー・ブッシュ・キャンプのキャンプ場として営業している。 大きな地図で見る レーランド兄弟の番組風景 http://www.bushcamp.com.au/Great Aussie Bush Camp （旧Leyland Brothers World)

    どんな蚊取り線香でも効かないBig Mosquito

    　ちょうど梅雨の最中にある今でも「蚊」のシーズンでもあり嫌になっちゃうが、ニューサウスウェールズ州のヘックサムでは年中「蚊のシーズン」でありながらそのことを喜ぶんだ。 　ヘックサムは、Ozzie the Mozzieと呼ばれているデカイ蚊の像があり、オーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つだ。 　いったいどういうところが蚊を称えるだろう？ 　実は、ヘックサムは「ヘックサム・グレー」という大きくてよく刺さる蚊の一種が多いところだ。 　ちなみに、mozzieはオージー英語らしくmosquito（蚊）の省略だ。 　The Big Mosquitoは元々1993年に作られたが2005年に改造版が新たに設置された。これが2010年3月に盗まれて、翌月再び新しい蚊のオブジェが作られた。この蚊にどんなに強力な香取線香でも虫除けでも効き目がないだろう、、、どうせ、コンクリートで作られているし、、、 大きな地図で見る
