Pigging Out On Pie Face And ‘Ello Elton

It was a bit of a landmark month as Aussie meet pies went on sale in central Tokyo as Pie Face opened a store in Shibuya, while down the road in Yokohama I got an unexpected chance to see Elton John live.

The pies were tasty, but a bit pricey, yet my workmates humored me with a visit there to dine together as the restaurant is within short walking distance of our office.

Elton, meanwhile, wasn’t someone I was overly keen on seeing, but I was pleased to get the chance. He was basically going through the motions, though, and didn’t really put on a dazzling display. Having received a free ticket, though, it’s fair to say I got my money’s worth, and was a little saddened to see he leaves the high notes for his young backing singers.

Autumn is also starting to hit.

    Australia Takes Over the Cultural Calendar: November’s Japan–Australia Yartz 2026年11月、日本で楽しむオーストラリア 11月の日豪Yartzは、アート、映画、音楽、そして美術館のあり方を考える国際交流まで、なかなか見逃せない内容になっている。 東京では、オーストラリアの現代アーティスト、ショーン・グラッドウェルが参加する大規模な文化イベントが開催される。映画では、受賞歴のあるアニメーション作品が上映・オンライン配信され、オーストラリア出身のピアニストによるリサイタルも横須賀と東京で予定されている。 さらに、オーストラリアのアーティストが参加する国際芸術祭や、日本とトレス海峡の歴史的なつながりを紹介する展示も続いている。今月は東京だけでなく、大阪や岐阜にも足を延ばしてみる価値がありそうだ。 November brings a particularly interesting collection of Australia–Japan cultural events, covering contemporary art, film, classical music and international museum exchange. Tokyo welcomes Australian contemporary artist Shaun Gladwell as part of an ambitious multidisciplinary cultural event. An award-winning Australian animation will be screened and made available online, while Ukrainian-born Australian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk performs in Yokosuka and Tokyo. There are also opportunities to explore Australian contributions to an international art festival in Gifu and discover the long historical connections between Japan and the Torres Strait.     豪メルボルン郊外で激しくなっている「マック紛争」

    　これこそがマック・アタック！どこにでもあり、幅広く支持されているので日本ではなかなか想像がつかない「マックドナルド紛争」が只今、オーストラリアメルボルン市郊外で大こととなっている。 　メルボルン中心部から東方約40キロにあるダンデノング山脈の一角にあるテコマという人口約3000人しかない小さな町にはマックドナルドのレストラン建設に関しての長年のバトルが今週結末となった。 　右記の地図が示すようにマクドナルドがメルボルン東部に進出していない。だが、長年、同社が森かピクニックや美しい風景などで観光地であるダンデノング山脈地方にレストランを開店することに努力したが、住民の猛反対で出来なかった。 　1990年代にかけて今世紀に入ってテコマの隣町であるベルグレーブでは開設計画がだめとなった末狙いがテコマに向かった。 　環境保全を支持する同地域住民が昔から多かったので、今回反マックドナルド派の先頭に立っている。地域議員サマンサ・ダン氏らが言うのは、マックドナルドが地域性に会わず、24時間営業が地域の治安が懸念されるようになり、地域の会社が経営難となる。また、米国の多国籍企業が同地域に合わないという。ほぼ10年間戦ったが、23日付、借地人紛争に対して判決を下すビクトリア州立民間行政裁判所（ＶＣＡＴ）がマクドナルド側の歌えを支持、レストラン建設を事実上許可した。 　すると、猛反発。今、反対派が建設予定地を占領し、ガーデンを作った。一部の人がそこに24時間体制でキャンプしている。また、反対を訴える歌や動画を多数作成している。 ニュース関係 Maccas Tecoma battle would have been ‘too expensive’ Protesters threaten to chain themselves to Tecoma McDonald’s site to stop development フェースブック関係 No Maccas in the Hills （グループ） No McDonald’s in the Dandenong Ranges

  • Zenshoen, A Story Of Cruel Tragedy

    All sorts of memories flooded back to me during a brief ride through Tama Zenshoen, a gorgeous park in outer western Tokyo, but also home to a tragic and cruel past for Japan’s Hansen’s disease patients. Zenshoen is a leprosarium and for most of its history, the 115-year-old facility was shut off from the rest of the world and its inhabitants quarantined inside, sterilized and forbidden from associating with the outside world, largely based on 1951 testimony to the Diet by Kensuke Mitsuda, a staunch segregationist but also unfortunately Japan’s foremost expert on leprosy at the time.
