Pigging Out On Pie Face And ‘Ello Elton

It was a bit of a landmark month as Aussie meet pies went on sale in central Tokyo as Pie Face opened a store in Shibuya, while down the road in Yokohama I got an unexpected chance to see Elton John live.

The pies were tasty, but a bit pricey, yet my workmates humored me with a visit there to dine together as the restaurant is within short walking distance of our office.

Elton, meanwhile, wasn’t someone I was overly keen on seeing, but I was pleased to get the chance. He was basically going through the motions, though, and didn’t really put on a dazzling display. Having received a free ticket, though, it’s fair to say I got my money’s worth, and was a little saddened to see he leaves the high notes for his young backing singers.

Autumn is also starting to hit.

    Oh, La La! Kangarou Pizzas, C’est Magnifique! … Plutôt

    Kangarou Pizzas are a French fast food chain. The chain appears to be based in Thionville, with outlets in Metz, Nancy and Varangéville. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the chain specializes in deliveries. It’s logo is a bouncing kangaroo, or kangarou in French! Being from the land of culinary delights, you’d expect Kangarou Pizzas to be a popular choice. Perhaps because of its origins, customers are more demanding, but the chain gets only average reviews on Trip Advisor, with 60% rating it as either “poor” or “terrible,” though it appears disgruntled users were more miffed by poor service than lousy food. Still, it’s nice to see kangaroos making their mark in France.

    Namatjira Legacy Torched! 豪画界の重要な自然遺産が放火で破壊される

    　豪ノーザン・テリトリー州にある重要な自然遺産として認められつつあった有名なユーカリ林がこの頃放火で全焼された、と豪各大手マスコミ社が4日付報道した。 Ghost gums on the verge of being recognized as part of the Northern Territory’s heritage have been destroyed by arson, according to various mainstream Australian media reports on Jan. 4. 　このユーカリ林はゴースト・ガムと呼ばれている木であり、初めて国際的に認められ有名となった豪先住民画家故アルバート・ナマトジラ氏が描いた木だった。 These eucalyptus trees had come to prominence after being painted by Albert Namatjira, the first indigenous Australian artist to achieve widespread global recognition. 　焼かれた林は、同州自然文化財を認可する寸前だったようだが、この数日間以内に放火された。動機など同州当局が捜査中だという。 The torched trees were apparently about to be recognized as an important part of the state’s heritage, but were burned to the ground some days ago.     Cleaning up my PC over the weekend, I got a great reminder of misspent hours more than a decade ago, when I found loads of vintage posters touting the wonders of Australia. Some of them also came from a campaign taking the piss of the retro trend. See if you can find which ones.     豪で最も雨が降る町は巨大ゴールデン・ゴムブーツ賞を（勝手に）受賞

    　ゴールデン・ゴムブーツ賞はオーストラリア最北部にあるタリー、イニスフェールとビビンダという三つの小さな町が競争する賞であり、最も多く雨が降る町が受賞される、、、 　、、、が、ビビンダが約４０年間に渡りほぼ毎年降雨がオーストラリア一にも関わらず、タリーの行動力が良く勝手に雨に関する「Big Things」でありゴールデン・ゴムブーツを２００３年に作成し、今同町の立派な観光スポットとなっている。 　ゴールデン・ゴムブーツの７．９メートルもある高さは同町の年間降雨記録だった１９５０年の意味も示す。なお、同地域が絶滅危機にあるイエアメガエルの繁殖地でもあり、その存在をゴールデン・ゴムブーツにも認められている。 　毎年、タリーがゴールデン・ゴムブーツフェスティバルも開催する。 View Larger Map

    豪のクリスマス・ソング：Christmas Photo

    　もはや、今年のクリスマスの日が後僅か数日間となった。 　日本を含めてほとんどの人のクリスマスに関する印象が北半球の真冬の行事だ。 　しかし、南半球を忘れないようにしようよ！ 　オーストラリアのクリスマスが真夏だ！ 　実は、ほとんどの場合、真夏でもクリスマスに関する飾りや行事が真冬っぽいの姿をオーストラリアでも現れる。 　だが、たとえトナカイの変わりにカンガルーがサンタのゾリをひっぱたり、サンタが半袖・短パン姿で描かれたりしてオージーっぽいのクリスマス・イメージもある。 　オーストラリアのクリスマス伝統一つがCarols by Candlelightと言います。これは、公園、海辺など屋外公の場で夕方になってろうそくをもってクリスマス・ソングを歌う習慣。とっても綺麗だ！そして、規模がさまざまだ。都市の中心部で数万人参加する物もあれば、近所たちごとで数人しかやらないこともある。おまけ、サマー・タイムで大体夜９時ごろまで明るく子供たちが夏休みなので、にぎやかな季節だ。 　今日の豪風クリスマス・ソングは、典型的なオーストラリア人歌手ジョン・ウィリアムソン作の「クリスマス・フォト」だ。家族揃ってクリスマスの昼食を食べた後にクリケットで遊んで記念写真を家族で撮ろうという話の歌だ。 　ちなみに、クリスマス・ランチを食べた後のクリケット遊びもオージー・クリスマス伝統一つとして言える。 CHRISTMAS PHOTO It’s December in Australia; Time to remember all the family.
