  • Acrobatic Start to Relations

What You Didn’t Know about Australia-Japan Relations Japan-Australia relations started off by swinging into action – literally. First contact came in 1867 when a Japanese acrobatic troupe visited Down Under in 1867. A few years later (the exact date is unknown – some say 1871, others 1874), Rikinosuke Sakuragawa, an acrobat touring Melbourne with another troupe, married an Australian woman and they settled in Queensland, where their descendants remain today.

Kangaroos are popular exhibits in Japanese zoos. But their success didn’t happen by accident. Keeping them healthy, however, proved far more challenging than displaying them. Japanese keepers needed to understand their diet, behaviour, reproduction and social structure. Australia Shared Its Knowledge Australian zoos and wildlife specialists worked closely with Japanese institutions. Veterinarians, animal keepers and researchers exchanged information on nutrition, enclosure design, breeding and veterinary care. The…

  • So It Goes…

Today marks farewell to Premiership Palace. Kangaeroo is no longer a Kanagawa kenmin (resident of Kanagawa Prefecture) from Kurokawa. Well, at least not after today. If nothing else, at least the pandemic allowed Kangaeroo to explore the neighborhood, getting to know what a delightful place it was. Time in Kanagawa has been very kind to Kangaeroo. In addition to allowing for a ramping up of cycling efforts, it has also been the place where he could watch his beloved Richmond Tigers become the most dominant team in Australian football. When Kangaeroo arrived in Kanagawa, the Tigers were something of a laughing stock. Out of the blue, they won that year’s…

    A Slice of Oz Enchantment

Somewhere in the backblocks of Tokyo’s Tama district, there’s a little Aussie enchantment at work. It could be coming from this jen, who stands about 1 meter high. She’s nestled in among the bark and grevillias. Her joey is enjoying the ride. And they’re lit up at night. Koala Colony
