Automaker Nissan Motor Co. has long used kangaroos in its advertising, particularly in the early 2010s and notably when enlisting the aid of technopop girl group Perfume, which was then at the peak of its popularity.
Nissan stylized Perfume’s three members–Kashiyuka, A-chan and Nocchi–as pink kangaroos to promote its Serena, Note and Cube models.

Perfume used the opportunity for a cross-promotion of their then-newly released single, Voice, which would go on to reach No. 2 on the Oricon national charts.

The campaign aimed to get the attention of a young, pop-loving audience who enjoyed animated characters and prompt them into visiting a Nissan dealership. The ad ran from July 14, 2010, continued past the release on Aug. 11, 2010 and ended in September of that year.

Nissan says the ad was part of its broader Nissan no Omise de! campaign, which largely centered around a kangaroo theme, so more entries will follow.

Perfume’s members supplied their own voices to the Nissan ad, and their single was the backing track for the commercial.

Perfume got tongues wagging with the release of Voice because its CD jacket featured a photo of the members’ legs only.
It was a landmark year for Perfume in 2010, as not only did they appear as kangaroos, they also became only the second all-female band following Speed to sell out a concert at Tokyo Dome.

Perfume maintained their popularity at a consistently high level thereafter, including a healthy overseas following. The group announced in September 2025 that it will go on hiatus at the end of the year.
Nissan was riding high at the time of the campaign, but has struggled in recent years.
