Did You Know A Japanese Cure Turned Out To Be A QR Aussies Use Daily?

Aussies scan QR codes countless times every day—for café menus, concert tickets, parking and payments. Yet few realise the technology was invented in Japan by one engineer who wanted to make work easier.

Meet the man behind the square

In 1994, Japanese engineer Masahiro Hara developed the QR code while working for Denso Wave. The company needed a faster way to track vehicle components during manufacturing. Hara’s solution could store far more information than ordinary barcodes while remaining quick to scan.

A gift, not a monopoly

Although Denso Wave patented the technology, it chose not to enforce the patent rights. This allowed QR codes to spread rapidly around the world and encouraged businesses everywhere to adopt the technology without paying licence fees.

Australia quickly embraced QR codes

Aussies first encountered QR codes in advertising and product packaging. During the COVID-19 pandemic they became part of everyday life, with millions of people scanning codes to check into venues. Today they are used for restaurant menus, transport, parking, payments, banking and sporting events.

Designed to be reliable

One reason QR codes became so successful is their built-in error correction. Even if part of the code is dirty or damaged, scanners can often recover the missing information. That reliability has helped make QR codes one of Japan’s most successful technological exports.

More than just a clever invention

Aussies now scan QR codes almost without thinking. Yet behind every scan is the work of a Japanese engineer whose practical idea changed the way the world shares information. It is another quiet reminder that many Australia–Japan connections are found in everyday life.

How’d Ya Shape An Aussie Garden In Suburban Tokyo?

Alex Endo, arguably Japan’s preeminent designer of Aussie gardens, carried out a remarkable transformation of our block in suburban Tokyo. He planned several months in advance over the winter. When the spring came around, he had a selection of Australian native plants ready to go into the block. How It Started Among the trees he planted in our back yard were a callistemon, a couple of species of grevillea, some myrtles and a banksia. These added to a wattle we had grown in a plant for a couple of years that we put into the ground. How It Turned Out We also added a decent…

Just as Japanese cinema was globally renowned in the 1950s only to subsequently fall into decline, Australian movies lauded across the world in the 1970s and 1980s can now no longer make much of an impact outside of their homeland. Unlike the domestic Japanese market, however, which is of a scale large enough to support its own industry, the Australian domestic movie business is tiny. This ensures that short of making a hit of the likes of the initial Crocodile Dundee series entries, the Mad Max series or something akin to Happy Feet or Moulin Rouge, a general release Australian movie is almost destined to be more of…

Why Did Aussie Farmers Invest In Japanese Genetics?

When Australia’s cattle industry discovered the extraordinary qualities of Japanese wagyu, success was anything but guaranteed. A small group of pioneering Aussie breeders took enormous risks, investing in bloodlines from the other side of the world. Their gamble helped create one of Australia’s most remarkable agricultural success stories. A Leap Into the Unknown In the early 1990s, premium beef was becoming increasingly important in international markets. While Australia already exported large volumes of beef, a handful of producers believed there was room for something exceptional. Japanese wagyu stood apart from every other breed they had studied. Its extraordinary marbling, eating quality and long-established reputation convinced them that…

Southern Crust: Japanese Snapper-Baker Not Loafing Around To Make Dough From Bread Down Under

Photographer and baker Kazuaki Ono has combined his dual talents to create the Southern Crust exhibition at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan in Marunouchi until Oct. 31. Southern Crust showcases signature loaves from remarkable Australian bakeries that Ono photographs in iconic locations across Australia from Bondi Beach to Brighton Bathing Boxes. He’ll give a reception and talk show at the FCCJ tonight (Oct. 7) to detail his remarkable story, which includes operating Akipan, a bakery in Sydney offering super soft Japanese bread, since 2023. “Running Akipan as both the owner and head baker has given me a unique perspective, balancing the creativity of photography with the craftsmanship of breadmaking….

  • Order for Aussie-Made Skim Milk Results in Kangaroo Delivery

A Chinese woman irked by the poor reputation of powdered skim milk produced in her homeland, got jumpy when her order of Australian-made milk contained more kick than she’d probably bargained for, not quite a boxing kangaroo, but a boxed kangaroo, according to Japanese news site Rocket News. Citing Chinese-language news sources Sina news and ET Today, Rocket says the woman from Qingdao, in China’s Shangdong Province, ordered a box of six cans of Australian-made skim milk through an online shopping site, but only two were delivered with the extra space in the box occupied by a live kangaroo. The kangaroo, which is in good health, was taken into the…

Monkeying Around With Shared Kobe Steel(e)s

Of the many commonalities shared by Australia and Japan, perhaps one of the quirkier ones is that both countries are home to a Kobe Steele known for monkeying around. Australia’s Kobe Steele founded the Orangutan Foundation International Australia (OFI Australia), and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021 for her services to conservation and the environment. Japan’s Kobe Steel Ltd., meanwhile, monkeyed around in a far less noble way, falsifying inspection and quality data on steel, aluminium and copper products for years, affecting hundreds of customers and resulting in billions of yen in fines after causing one of Japan’s most significant industrial quality scandals in recent…
