How Does An Aussie Garden Give Time To Paws?

One of the highlights of our Aussie garden in suburban Tokyo over the years has been kangaroo paws, except for this year.

We initially planted a couple, but in the darker corner of the garden, and after the first couple of years one died and the other was sickly and did not bloom.

We’ve achieved much greater success planting from seed. In fact, our kangaroo paws did so well we could give plants to most of the neighbors, as well as friends and colleagues.

This year, though, only two of about 12 different kangaroo paws have bloomed (though my next-door neighbor’s have flourished!).

July can be a pretty tough month. For the past three years, the lawn has turned into a dustbowl in July, which prompted me to plant a Japanese grass (zoysia) this year so it would at least look green in the summer. It started reasonably well, but then got what I suspect is a fungal infection and is struggling. I think ants may have gotten stuck into the roots, too. Whatever has happened, it looks sickly.

Our jacaranda has also failed to bloom again for the fourth successive year despite many attempts to liven it up. Phosphorus would probably do the job and get it flowering, but Aussie plants hate it, so it’s not really an option.

Our grevillea is thriving once again after a slow start and a precarious journey through spring. It’s now producing dozens of flowers again and looking resplendent.

The dicksonia antarctica tree fern has also flourished under a shade that replaced the climbing hardenbergia that succumbed to a frost in the winter.

Another great favorite, the coastal banksia, has died. It is possibly the greatest disappointment of the garden so far. It cost a pretty penny and never flowered. It was only after a couple of years that I realized we had planted in it the darkest part of the garden with very little access to sunlight. This would prove to be a fatal mistake, or the cold, as the banksias love the sun. It got root rot, so I took it out of the ground, cleaned the roots and re-potted it, but to no avail. We still have three banksias growing in the ground. We have never had one flower. Hopefully next year.

Thongs

Australian parliament breaks into song after passing same-sex marriage law
