Castle In The Air

From Atami, we backtracked only the old Tokaido route to the castle town of Odawara.

We were delighted to be presented by a garden full of flowers again, this time the hydrangea and shobu, both plants that bloom around now when the rainy season hits.

Mrs. Kanageroo had never climbed the keep of the castle, so we headed upstairs through the concrete recreation of the once crucial fortress in feudal times and enjoyed the glorious view it gave of the once strategic city.

Greater things awaited, though, so we didn’t linger for long, but were there for just enough time for Mrs. Kangaeroo to get an unexpected horse ride.

Drongo

  • Don’t Buy GoPro

Kangaeroo.com made the silly mistake of buying a GoPro camera. The camera itself worked initially, but it had a smart remote, which was embedded in a selfie stick. The smart remote didn’t work from the outset. Kangaeroo.com contacted the company’s Japanese support page, selecting the English option for support. This was in May 2018 and it started a yearlong nightmare. Following GoPro’s instructions, the remote and selfie stick were sent for repairs. Only the remote was sent back. This one didn’t work, either. GoPro, meanwhile, could not be contacted. Kangaeroo.com sent the useless camera and parts to the Japanese agent, telling them their product was a piece of shit that…

Happy Australia Day!

The Japan-Australia Link To The Great Train Robbery

Ronnie Biggs and the Great Train Robbery were pretty well-known among my generation of Australians growing up, and recognition of the famous long-term fugitive was enough in Japan for his 2014 death to be widely reported. What is less established, however, is that both Japan and Australia have a much closer connection to the crook than many in either country know. Biggs was one of a gang of about 16 people who carried out the Great Train Robbery in 1963, making off with 2.61 million pounds (worth about 12.16 billion yen today). Biggs used his share of the haul to pay for almost 40 years on the run, most famously…

  • Turn it up

“Turn it up” in Strine means to be quiet, or be reasonable, or can also be a request to cease conversation.
