Almost Over The Line

It looks like Mrs. Kangaeroo has decided we have been at our current home for long enough and it’s time to start looking for something bigger.

It’s understandable, but given my difficulties in finding and holding jobs in our time together, we’ve had to take what we could get. Thankfully, we’ve been gifted with a tad of stability.

Anyway, the ever-industrious better half of this partnership is plugging away at something.

Boomerang Shrine And Shooting The Rapids

Mrs. Kangaeroo and I got another wonderful experience shooting down the rapids in the delightful Saitama Prefecture town of Nagatoro, which is also home to a shrine hoping to draw people back with something of an Aussie touch. Boomerang Kaeru Shrine, just outside Nagatoro Station, is dedicated to the worship of frogs, but is actually a play on words. The Japanese for frog is kaeru (蛙), but also a homonym for returning home (帰る), hence the boomerang, which (allegedly) returns to the thrower upon being hurled. (This is a story for another day). Also got to find some Engrish that appealed to my eternal schoolboy side.

  • Don’t Think!

A good mate of mine often quotes William Shakespeare’s Hamlet by reminding me that, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Kangaeroo is prone to over-thinking, and this week is looming as a tough one. There’s plenty on the schedule, both professionally and privately. And it’s still bloody cold and dark. Moreover, riding up some hills yesterday and being easily overtaken and outpaced by another old codger, then hearing my heavy breathing along the river this morning sparked another reminder from Hamlet that I am fat and scant of breath! But in better news, the relatively mild weather of the past few days has hinted…

  • Hello Cocky!

Spring is drawing closer by the day, if not actually here already in Tokyo, but that doesn’t mean the warmth has arrived yet, though the cockatoo in Kangaeroo Corner couldn’t care less. Every morning is getting lighter and the flowers are blooming. Kangaeroo Corner’s wattle is resplendent! We were originally going to have a wattle-viewing party in the early spring, but it looks like reality has intervened. Speaking of reality, it’s bloody chilly again today. Apparently, this is only a one-off. It’s a little apt, as the icy relationship with my boss is becoming positively chilling after we were dumped with yet more work following the departure of yet another…

  • Washout

Heavy rain put a dampener on any outside activity this morning, but it was a good chance for other activities, notably the family dinosaur throwing herself into a bath. She’s the clumsiest bather imaginable and watching her trying to bathe always fills my heart with warmth and hope that she’ll eventually get the practice down right one day. No luck so far, though. Otherwise, it was a great day for the garden as the rain poured down in the morning and the sun is coming out now. It looks green, lush and healthy. How long it will remain like that is anyone’s guess. For now, though, it’s off on a…
