Big Red Bike Tour Stage 10: Washout!

Raindrops and more kept falling on my head and everywhere else today, putting paid to Stage 10 of the Big Red Bike Tour, which became a washout.

Admittedly, I didn’t have anything planned and was just going to let things go as they flowed.

And flow they did, thanks to the long-awaited rains.

But heavy rains from Tropical Storm Peipah gifted me with a day of rest and slow time to spend with Dino, our rosy faced lovebird.

And that wasn’t the only gift the precipitation presented as the garden delighted in being drenched following weeks of searing temperatures and virtually no rainfall.

The plants and soil were basking in the wet and I carried most of our potplants out into the open so they could benefit from the rain, too.

I’ve watered the garden at least twice daily across the summer, but tap water is no comparison for rainfall, so I’m glad the plants are getting a good soaking at last.

I hope there’s also a filip ahead for Dino, who has headed off with Mrs. Kangaeroo to the Yokohama Bird Clinic. Our little pterror hates the ruffle she wears to prevent her from pecking her infected bum, which prevents her from pooping, and now appears to have stopped her from willingly eating and drinking. It is excriciatingly painful to watch the once active Dino languishing. I return to work next week and can spend little time caring for her, let alone take her on the hospital commute.

Of course, when we get Dino to the vet she shows more animation than she has all week.

  • Forget Tiptoeing thru Tulips and Plod thru Paddies

Normally, we’d be smack-bang in the middle of the rainy season by now (and we are, officially), but the skies have held off for the past few days, providing great cycling weather which has made for some wonderful rides, including this morning’s through the rice paddies of outer suburban Tokyo. May seemed a little cooler and damper than usual this year, and all sorts of appointments meant I wasn’t able to ride as much as I would have liked. June is a hard month for cycling as there is so much rain. I have pretty much given up on riding in the rain if possible, now, due to the rapid…

  • Little Things Bringing Great Pleasure

Spring can never come fast enough, especially now that I’m into gardening and have been able to experience the almost indescribable delight of watching the seasonal transformation of plants. But, having been teased into taking action only for nature to take a U-turn, I’m being drawn to the less obvious delights on show in Kangaeroo Corner. Heading into the last few days of March, my expectation was that we could see plenty of flourishing grevillea, bottlebrush, banksia and protea, not to mention the explosion of pink from Japan’s national flower, the cherry blossom, which transforms the country into what I reckon is the most beautiful place on earth for a…

…ah, so* have a Winfield: The Tiny Tale Of Aussie Durries In Japan

A long, long time ago, in a Straya far, far away, Australia briefly exported cigarettes to Japan. It wasn’t that long ago, actually. But for several months in 1994, Winfield cigarettes, one of Australia’s most famous brands (it marketed itself as “Australia’s No. 1 brand” in Japan, but it was actually only the second-biggest seller Down Under, behind Peter Jackson), was an unlikely competitor of mostly British and American Big Tobacco companies to tap into what was still then a thriving Japanese smokers’ market largely unregulated at the time.Winfield was on a downturn at the time in its home country.Cigarette advertising had been banned from TV and print media decades earlier, but…
