As anyone who knows Australian slang could tell you, anything with a hue as azure as the latest bike in my fleet could only possibly be given a name like Big Red. So that’s exactly what it got, and that’s not making a blue in the slightest.
Big Red came to us in a bit of an accident. Someone stole the all-terrain, all-weather bike I’d built up to trek across the country (and then it returned four months later in the exact place it had been taken from). Mrs. Kangaeroo felt pity for me that my efforts (and money) had gone to waste and let me buy Big Red secondhand as a replacement.
We got Big Red to ride in the wet because she has disc brakes and stability, which are crucial as my arthritis-ridden hands and infected finger have made riding not only difficult at times but also dangerous given my greatly hampered braking ability.
We’ve had really lousy weather this week, but not in terms of opportunities to get on the Big Red. She has loved the rain and slamming through puddles and traversing across any landscape, suggesting to me that the versatility gravel bikes provide may indeed make them more than just a mere marketing ploy. As an adventure bike, Big Red is now giving me the idea of perhaps heading off on an autumnal oddysey.
