Crickey! Plugging The Fountain Of Strewth

One of the things that gardening has taught me is just how pleasing tiny little events can be, and few items have brought joy as great as the Fountain of Strewth has done.

When first setting up the garden, I noticed many experts spoke about encouraging pollinators and how water features could achieve this.

I bought a cheap bird bath and solar-powered water sprayer from a shonky Chinese e-commerce site, and the Fountain of Strewth was born. I’d never imagined the sheer joy it could bring as it attracted birds to our garden, who loved drinking and bathing in its waters, which I made sure to change daily to avoid it becoming a lure for mozzies looking to lay their eggs.

The fountain went so well, I installed another one on our garden gate, and soon we were getting visits from all types of feathered friends. But, as is life, all things come to pass, and we had to pull the plug on the Fountain of Strewth. The neighbors complained that birds were pooping on their laundry and that we were also attracting unsightly pigeons (true) and crows (untrue).

It was cruel as the harsh summer with little rain has left the local birdies without many drinking spots, but in the interests of good neighborliness, and despite my irritation, I shut down both fountains immediately and packed them away. Sort of. I moved the dish beneath our grevillea, and it seems to fill with clean water every day. Fortunately, the tits found it fairly quickly, and I am sure that nobody could complain about wanting to attract cute little tits to a garden.
