Fountain of Strewth Frozen Over!

It’s a gloriously sunny morning today, but bloody freezing, as attested to by the Fountain of Strewth freezing over.

Birds are coming to Kangaeroo Corner throughout the day every day at this time of year, largely to enjoy a drink or a bath from the Fountain of Strewth.

I broke the ice so our avian mates would be able to imbibe if they wanted to, but couldn’t refill the bath as the hose has frozen over.

My sports drink formed ice crystals during the morning ride.

I’m not a great fan of the cold, but Tokyo has a pretty good winter if you have to have one. It’s generally sunny and the days are bearable. Even the late nights and early mornings are OK if dressed appropriately. The air is often clean, crisp and invigorating. And I absolutely love watching the birds come to bathe in our garden: it surprises me the extent of delight such a sight brings to me.

This week is supposed to be cold all week. Statistically, we’re in the coldest part of the year. It’s the most demanding time for Aussie plants and we went well below zero this morning.

I’ve wrapped protective covers around the frailest of the plants, which are mostly those still in pots, and refrained from watering in case the water freezes overnight and harms the roots. I’ll hold off until the weekend, when it’s supposed to get a little warmer. I noticed the kangaroo paws looking a little worse for wear this morning. But I have faith they’ll be hardy enough to get by over the next few weeks.

  • Every Cloud Has a Sliver of Whining

An unseasonably warm and dry late winter and early spring has given way to more customary wet, with really lousy weather since rain began early yesterday morning. Wet weather makes me whine, but I really shouldn’t because it was supposed to pour all day today, but I woke to warm sunshine and got to ride (and see the cherry blossoms!) It was a bit of a mixed bag, because I ended up getting a puncture….my fourth in the past week, added to which I destroyed my pump because the tip of the tire valve got caught inside and can’t be removed without breaking the pump head. So you can imagine…

  • Moving Mountains

This weekend was probably the last until the very end of the year where I would be able to do a decent amount of cycling, and timing presented the opportunity to return to mountain riding for the first time in over three years. I got to ride through Takao first and see my physician for a regular check up. This allowed me to grab some time in Takao Komagino Teien, the gorgeous Japanese garden adjacent to my hospital. I enjoyed a leisurely ride over Otarumi Pass, a popular ride for many cyclists in Tokyo, and was pleasantly surprised that the journey up the hill wasn’t as demanding as I had…

‘I won’t have to do Q&A again’: PM spoofs end of the world

  • A Pheasant Makes Things Pleasant

Late May is nearly always an idyllic time with the glorious weather hiding the impending onset of the rainy season. This morning’s ride was made even pleasanter by getting to spend time looking at a glorious Japanese green pheasant reigning over its territory near the Asakawa River. Pretty much every weekday (when the weather is halfway decent), I get to ride my bike, mostly along the Tama River, and I love it. Returning home today was a delight, though as the grevillea are in full bloom. A row of the gorgeous flowers is simply breathtaking. Only one of the three grevillea in Kangaeroo Corner is blooming. One of the others…
