There’s McDonald’s in just about every town in Japan, but in Fuchu at the moment, there’s a couple of MacDonalds with a very special story, indeed.

Connor and Callum MacDonald are brothers from Brisbane, and both professional sports people whose games took them to different sides of the world….except for now.

Connor MacDonald is in Fuchu as part of the Australian team taking part in the Japan leg of the World Baseball Classic, which will be held in Tokyo in March. The Aussies are based in Fuchu, which they have made their home away from home for the third time, and join a long list of Australian sporting teams to base themselves in the suburban Tokyo city.

One of the reasons they’re in Fuchu is because it promotes itself as Rugby City, courtesy of being home to two professional rugby union teams. One of those, Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo, is the team of Callum MacDonald, Connor’s younger brother and a resident of Fuchu for the past five years.

With Connor plying his talents on diamonds in Australia and the U.S. and Callum scrumming in Japan the siblings are crossing paths on sporting fields, albeit half a world away from their native Brisbane.

Callum has been showing Connor the sights. “He’s been showing me all the restaurants, little spots, and the sights and scenes of Fuchu. It’s been amazing to have my home here and spend some time with him that I don’t always get,” Connor told Eric Balnar, who has been writing an amazing series of stories on the Australian team in Fuchu for Baseball.com.au.

Baseball.com.au is packed with an array of top-class tales and plenty of media on how the Australian team is preparing for the WBC, and making great inroads into the community while doing so.

Kangaeroo.com visited one of their games last weekend and was impressed by how closely the community got behind the Aussies, a credit both to the team and the typical warmth and hospitality of many people in Japan.

Dead Horse

Bluey

    Putting The Limp Into Olympics

Japan did the most amazing job of hosting the Olympic Games under the mostr trying of circumstances, and I would argue there probably isn’t a country on earth that could have done it nearly as well. But the big question is: Why? We held the Games behind closed doors. Only the most privileged of guests were able to see the athletes do their thing, and I’m sure the quarantining rules were broken for many. Personally, I got to see almost nothing. I saw none of the downtown Tokyo events, but did get to perform an errand near Horse Park, where the equestrian events were held. The park was surrounded by…

Why Is A Strine Sponger Not A Good Pickup? Every workplace, every share house, every family gathering has one: the person who never quite pays their share, never quite pulls their weight, and always seems to be there right when the food comes out. Aussies have a word for them: sponger. Meaning A sponger is someone who lives off other people’s generosity–money, food, a couch to crash on –without ever giving anything back. The image is a kitchen sponge: soaking everything up, contributing nothing. spongerとは、お金でも食べ物でも寝床でも、他人の親切に頼って生きているのに、 何一つお返しをしない人のこと。 Example “Don’t invite Dave to the barbie. He’s a total sponger, never brings a snag or a coldie.”

Crikey
