Hostie（ホスティー）とは？

オーストラリア人は、とにかく言葉を短くするのが大好きです。

Breakfast は brekkie。

Barbecue は barbie。

Mosquito は mozzie。

そして hostess や air hostess は hostie。

昔は女性の客室乗務員を指してよく使われた言葉ですが、現在では flight attendant という表現が一般的になっています。

そのため hostie は、少し昔のオーストラリア英語を感じさせる言葉と言えるでしょう。

    Australia is exhibiting at the recently opened Expo Osaka 2025, and it got me thinking about the difference between now and the last time Japan’s second city held the world’s fair in 1970.     豪キャブラリー： Chook

    　チキン（鶏）はオーストラリア特有の鳥ではないが、chookという呼び方は独特なオージー英語だ。ちなみにchookがオージー英語で生むのはgoogy eggだ。また、コミュニティグループなどでよく行なわれるくじ引きを「chook raffle」と呼ぶ。由来はおそらく通常1等の賞品が冷凍チキンだったからだろう。なぜだか分からないが、chookは人のニックネームとしてもよく使われている。

    豪キャブラリー： Strides

    オーストラリア以外の英語圏では、making stridesをいうと「大きく前に進む」という意味になるが、オージー英語では同様の意味がある上に同じ表現が「ズボンを作る」との意味になる。Strideは「大きな一歩」という意味。当然、一歩をとるのが足なので、足がズボンの中に入れるからおそらくこれがオージー英語の「strides＝ズボン」の由来だろう。ズボンはdaksという独特のオージー英語の言い方もある。
