Why Did Japan Fall In Love With The Frill-necked Lizard?

Few Aussie animals have captured Japan’s imagination quite like the frill-necked lizard. For a brief moment in the 1980s, this remarkable reptile became one of Japan’s biggest stars. But why did one unusual Australian lizard become a household name nearly 7,000 kilometres from home?

An Unusual Aussie

Australia is famous for unusual wildlife.

Kangaroos hop.

Koalas sleep.

But the frill-necked lizard does something completely different.

When threatened, it spreads the large frill around its neck, opens its mouth wide and dashes away on its back legs.

It’s one of nature’s most unforgettable displays.

The Commercial That Changed Everything

In 1984, a Japanese television commercial introduced millions of viewers to the frill-necked lizard.

Its dramatic display fascinated audiences almost overnight.

Children wanted to see one.

Toy makers rushed to produce merchandise.

Zoos suddenly found themselves welcoming crowds eager to meet Australia’s newest celebrity.

More Than a Passing Craze

Like many popular crazes, the excitement eventually faded.

Yet the frill-necked lizard never disappeared from Japanese popular culture.

People who grew up during the 1980s still smile when they hear its name.

For many Japanese, it remains one of the first Australian animals they ever learned about.

A Cultural Ambassador

The frill-necked lizard probably never realised it had become an ambassador.

Yet it helped introduce millions of Japanese people to Australia’s extraordinary wildlife.

Long before social media, one remarkable reptile inspired curiosity about a country many people had never visited.

More Than Nostalgia

Today, Australia’s wildlife continues to inspire Japanese travellers.

Many visitors still hope to see animals they first encountered in childhood.

For some, that journey began not with a kangaroo or a koala—

but with a little lizard wearing an enormous frill.

An Unknown Nichigo Story

The frill-necked lizard never signed a treaty.

It never gave a speech.

Yet it introduced Australia to an entire generation of Japanese children.

Sometimes, international friendship begins in the most unexpected ways.

Did You Know?

The Japanese name エリマキトカゲ (erimaki tokage) literally means “frilled-collar lizard.” During the 1984 boom, it became one of Japan’s most recognisable Australian animals, appearing in toys, books, magazines and television.

How Did Japanese Shellfish Help Aussie Harvesters Realize The World Was Their Oyster?

Aussie oysters are famous around the world. Few people realise that one of the industry’s biggest turning points began in Japan. A tiny shellfish—and decades of scientific cooperation—helped reshape Australian aquaculture. An Industry Faces New Challenges For generations, Australia’s oyster industry relied on the native Sydney rock oyster. It remains one of the country’s finest seafoods. But during the 20th century, growers faced disease, slow growth and changing environmental conditions. They began searching for new ideas. Japan had centuries of experience cultivating oysters. Its farmers had developed efficient methods for collecting oyster spat, raising young oysters and managing…

  • Green Godzilla

On what was something of a strange weekend, perhaps the weirdest moment came when I got to come face-to-face with a green, as in made of plants, Godzilla. There’re plenty of Godzilla statues and effigies all over Tokyo, as I’ve reported before, and the rest of Japan, some life-sized, others tiny and plenty in-between and loving devoted to Japan’s most adored monster. In western Tokyo, where I live, the most famous example is probably the Godzilla statue outside the TOHO CO., LTD. studios near Seijogakuen-mae, which is a bit of a trip for me further out in the boonies. So, I was surprised to learn that there is actually a…

  • My Heavenly Hometown, Hounded By Hitler

With time on hand recently, I was going through historical records of the small Australian village where I spent my childhood and got a profound shock. I discovered the sleepy little hamlet I’d believed to have been a cosy resort area for day trips out of Melbourne had also been a breeding ground of Teutonic terror in the years immediately before World War II. Belgrave is located about 40 km east of Melbourne’s central business district and is a tourist-commuter town to this day with the bulk of its visitors coming to ride on the Puffing Billy Railway, a steam train that starts its trips from the village. Belgrave has…

The Japan-Australia Link As A Fallen Star Became A Black Hole

Japan has become pretty much synonymous with high quality construction, but that didn’t prove to be in what was supposed to be a star project in Melbourne but ended up being more of a black hole. The 120-meter-high Melbourne Star Ferris wheel was supposed to be a boon for tourism in Australia’s largest city, as well as a strong leap forward for Sanoyas, an Osaka-based shipbuilding company looking to expand into the amusement park business. The Melbourne Star was plagued from the outset. It was supposed to open in 2006, but didn’t start taking customers until two years later. It ran for just 40 days when it was shut down…
