Franger: Bagging It Up Down Under

Strine has a long tradition of giving ordinary objects names that sound as though someone made them up five minutes ago. “Franger” is one of the ruder examples. It’s Strine for a condom. Like dinger. The word belongs firmly in casual speech rather than polite or formal English, and its slightly cheeky sound is entirely in keeping with the irreverent side of Aussie slang.
Meaning
“Franger” is Australian slang for a condom. It is highly informal and belongs to the jokey, sometimes crude side of Aussie vocabulary. It is not appropriate for formal writing or most polite situations. The additional “sausage” sense supplied for this entry could not be sufficiently verified in reliable sources, so it is not treated as an established meaning here.
Example
「Don’t forget to buy some frangers.」
“Don’t forget to buy some frangers.”
This is deliberately casual and jokey. Because “franger” is slang for a condom, using it without understanding the register could easily produce an embarrassing moment, especially in a formal or unfamiliar setting.
Australia–Japan connection
For Japanese learners, the important lesson here is register. English already has the ordinary word “condom.” Choosing “franger” deliberately moves the conversation into very informal Australian slang. Knowing the dictionary meaning is therefore only half the job; knowing when not to use the word is equally important.

There are words you can learn from a dictionary, and there are words you learn because somebody says them at the wrong moment and everyone suddenly starts laughing. Franger belongs firmly in the second group.
