日本とオーストラリアの友好は、首都の政府だけで育まれるものではない。地域や自治体、そして人々の交流こそが、両国の絆を日々深めている。
Australia and Japan’s friendship is built on more than government meetings in national capitals. Local communities, councils and personal relationships play a vital role in bringing the two countries closer.
2026年、初の「日豪サブナショナル外交フォーラム」が開催された。東京都の小池百合子知事が基調講演を行い、地方自治体、大学、スポーツ、教育、地域コミュニティなど、幅広い分野の関係者が参加した。
The inaugural Australia–Japan Subnational Diplomacy Forum 2026 brought together representatives from local government, academia, sport, education and community organisations. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of cooperation beyond national governments.
議論のテーマは、地域間連携や草の根交流から、スポーツ、技術革新、災害対応、若者の交流まで多岐にわたった。
Participants explored opportunities for regional partnerships, grassroots exchanges, sporting connections, innovation, disaster response and youth engagement.
日豪友好協力基本条約の署名から50年。これからの半世紀も、地域と地域、人と人とのつながりが、両国の関係を支える大きな力になりそうだ。
With 50 years having passed since the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, these local links offer a strong foundation for the next half-century of Australia–Japan relations. Sometimes, international friendship grows strongest when it starts close to home.
Would really have loved to attend this, but space was limited and I wasn’t lucky enough to get an invite. Still, it’s great to see the Australia-Japan relationship tighten on many different levels.
