Big Pie

The Big Pie, Yatala, QLD

Chiba Company Rapt To Choose A Roo For Wrapping

Kangaroos are the choice of a company symbol for packaging-materials trading company Kawawa Co., Ltd. from Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture. Kawawa chose to use a kangaroo to symbolize their operations because it represents “the spirit of wrapping,” according to the company’s website. Although the company has nothing to do with Australia, it chose to represent itself with the country’s national symbol because its pouch is a natural metaphor for wrapping, carrying with care, and protecting what’s inside. Even beyond the company’s official explanation for using a kangaroo logo, the choice is very logical for Japanese commercial design. The pouch representation is perfect for packaging. A kangaroo’s pouch is one of the…

Japan’s Mobs Of Macropod Motifs Missing Marsupials In Masterpieces

Something strikes me about kangaroos in Japan, where companies like Seino and Nikko Kanko have made the marsupials highly visible. Kangaroos are possibly even higher profile than their native Australia, where Qantas uses the national symbol in its logo, but the macropod is a somewhat uncommon sight elsewhere in the corporate sector. I wouldn’t go so far as to say kangaroos are a ubiquitous presence in the Japanese retail or corporate sector, but it would be no exaggeration to claim they are a daily presence. Far more so, actually, than they are in Australia. That got me to thinking about the presence of kangaroos in the Japanese art world, which…

Sweets Paradise has outlets throughout Japan, but also sells its wares online.

Miranda Kerr ‘Teas Off’ as Japan’s Midsummer Santa

Aussie model Miranda Kerr is gaining an increasingly high profile in the lucrative Japanese market with her new ad for Lipton tea released on Tuesday. Kerr, a Victoria’s Secret angel, brand ambassador for Japanese fashion label Samantha Thavasa and wife of Hollywood heartthrob Orlando Bloom, appears as a midsummer Santa in the commercial for a brand of Lipton tea. Kerr’s unseasonal Santa ad is the second commercial she’s made for the British brewer’s Japanese outfit, following an earlier version where she was a waitress.

  • Down Under Cobbers On Top In Japanese Business

A longtime cobber contacted me this morning to let me know about a story of some of the Aussies doing roaring business in Japan; a market that can be tough to crack. I’m not a businessperson, or even remotely entrepreneurial, but I’ve had the pleasure to get to know plenty of Aussies in Japan who have done remarkably well in the Japanese market. Tracey Northcott is a superstar businessperson. I first met her in 2002 when she was running a cracking business centered on the then fledging field of mobile phones. She has since gone from strength to strength, succeeding in one business after another, all while juggling a busy…

    Australiana for Australia Day

Australiana Sittin’ at home last Sunday mornin’ me mate Boomer rang (boomerang). Said he was havin’ a few people around for a barbie, Said he might cook a burra (kookaburra) or two. I said, “Sounds great, will Walla be (wallaby) there?” He said “Yeah and Veggie might (Vegemite) come too”. So I said to the wife “Do you wanna Go Anna (goanna)?”. She said “I’ll go if Din goes (dingoes).” So I said “What’ll (wattle) we do about Nulla?” He said “Nulla bores (Nullarbor) me to tears, leave him at home.” We got to the party about two and walked straight out the kitchen to put…
