現代オーストラリアの文化には「鞭打ち」が独特な役割を果たした、と豪鞭打ち境界がいう。 その貢献を称えるため、オーストラリア北部にあるノーザン・テリトリー州首都ダーウィンより車で約1時間離れているヌーナマー町に「ビッグ・ストックヒップ」が2003年に作られ、オーストラリアの「Big Things」を仲間入りした。 高さ約８メートルの「ビッグ・ストックヒップ」はエコ牧場を経営するミック・デニガン氏に作られてた。ストックホイップ（家畜用の鞭）は農業大国であるオーストラリアに欠かせない存在となり、大きく貢献したはずだ。以下のビデオで見られるようにデニガン氏自身がかなりユニークな方であり、牧場経営の上に手作りで年間約３万の鞭を作ったり、歌も歌ったり、自由な時間にワニ狩人だという。 View Larger Map オーストラリア鞭打ち協会

なんだかんだ言っても多くのオーストラリア人がやけにdaggy、要するにダサいもの、を非常に高くすると言っていいと思う。その現れの一つがオーストラリアの「Big Things」であるかもしれない。全国各州に渡ってほとんどの場合全く意味がないがデカイ、キッチュな彫刻などが所々で作られている。 その「Big Things」の始まりがクィーンズランド州ナンボー町にあるビッグ・パイナップルである。 ビッグ・パイナップルは1971年に観光を推進するためにナンボー町のある牧場に立てられた。クィーンズランドが熱帯地であり、パイナップルをはじめ熱帯地果物業が盛んだ。開設当時、高さ16メートルのパイナップル彫刻しかなかったが行こう、乗り物かレストランやお土産やなどを建設して、同州の人気観光スポットの一つとなった。 しかし、2000年代に入ったら経営が悪化し、2009年に倒産した。が、新しい経営者が現れ、リフォームし昨年再び営業開始となった。 オーストラリア国内だけでは「Big Things」が約150件あると言われ、ビッグ・パイナップルがその中で初期頃に建てられ、その後のキッチュ大国に大きく貢献した。 View Larger Map Big Pineapple Official Website The Big Pineapple (Wkipedia)
