「やばいリンガル」Root（根付く）

今回もちょっとnaughtyなので、、、、大人限定。　

　オーストラリア以外の英語圏では、rootを動詞として使うと「応援する」という意味だが、オージー英語では激やばい意味になるから気を付けて。どういう意味かは、大人の方のみ見てください。

Using root as a verb in other countries means to support, but it spells trouble in Strine. Find out how, but only if you’re over 18.

    オーストラリアは、昔から「水泳大国」と呼ばれオリンピックなどと多くの金メダルを取れ、水泳及び水泳選手についての伝説的な話しもたくさんある。 　そんなに国の文化に根づいたら、当然言葉にも影響を及ぶことはいうまでもない。世界有数の水着Speedoはオーストラリア発でもあり、オージー英語ではスイムウエアに関する言葉がたくさんあり、今日の豪キャブラリーであるtogsもその一つ。主にオーストラリアの東南部で使われているようだ。水着を示すの他の独特なオージー英語もcozzieやbathersなどもある。

    「やばいリンガル」Lurk (待ち伏せる)

    　普通、米・英語ではlurkにはちょっと暗いイメージがあるが、オージー英語ではそれに加えてもっと軽い感じの意味もある。クリックすれば、どのように違うかが分かるよ。 　To lurk implies something dark when normally used in English, but when it comes to Strine, being on a good lurk in Australia is not such a bad deal.

    豪キャブラリー： Rage

    Rageはほかの英語圏の国でいうと「怒る」か「おこる」の意味になるがオージー英語では同様の使い方の上に「盛り上がる」という意味にもなる。英語ではステロイド服用の副作用である怒りをroid rageと言い、車などの事故後の激怒はroad rageだけどオージー英語のall night rageは一晩中怒っているという意味じゃなくて、一晩中遊んでいるという意味になる。

  • Hooroo/バイバイ

    hooroo Australian English A quaint way of saying goodbye. Sometimes, “toodleoo,” is used instead.
