豪キャブラリー： Chook
チキン（鶏）はオーストラリア特有の鳥ではないが、chookという呼び方は独特なオージー英語だ。ちなみにchookがオージー英語で生むのはgoogy eggだ。また、コミュニティグループなどでよく行なわれるくじ引きを「chook raffle」と呼ぶ。由来はおそらく通常1等の賞品が冷凍チキンだったからだろう。なぜだか分からないが、chookは人のニックネームとしてもよく使われている。

Australia’s last man of the people to become prime minister is no longer. Robert James Lee “Bob” Hawke died earlier this week, just two days before his beloved Australian Labor Party is expected to re-take office in the May 18 federal election following six years of misrule by an incompetent Liberal–National Party coalition government. Hawke was 89. He was a popular prime minister whose time in office went from 1983 to 1991. He remains the longest-serving Labor prime minister in Australian history. g’day Australian English G’day is the typical Australian greeting, used at any time of the day or night upon meeting another person. It is arguably the most famous example of Australian English. 豪キャブラリー： Belt up
Belt upを聞くとまずシートベルトを付けると思うがちだが、オージー英語ではシートベルト及び普通のベルトでもまったく関係ありません！ かえて、安全を守ってくれるシートベルトやズボンなどを落ちないように役立つベルトのようなポジティブな感覚が一切なく、「黙れ」または「人をボコボコにする」という意味になる。この場合の使い方の由来は、恐らく昔ではベルトがよく体罰に使われたからだろう。しかし、なぜ「shut up」の代わりに使えるようになったかが不明だ。
