豪キャブラリー： Chook

　チキン（鶏）はオーストラリア特有の鳥ではないが、chookという呼び方は独特なオージー英語だ。ちなみにchookがオージー英語で生むのはgoogy eggだ。また、コミュニティグループなどでよく行なわれるくじ引きを「chook raffle」と呼ぶ。由来はおそらく通常1等の賞品が冷凍チキンだったからだろう。なぜだか分からないが、chookは人のニックネームとしてもよく使われている。

    　オージー英語って、多くの言葉がオーストラリア独特な使い方があって、ほかの国で話す英語と言葉が同じでも意味がまったく違うことがたまにある。ここでは、その例を数多く紹介します。今日は、clobberの誤解について見てみます。

    「On the dole」ってどういう意味？ オーストラリア人が “He’s on the dole.” と言ったら、お人形の話ではありません。 The dole とは、失業した人などが政府から受け取る生活支援金（失業給付）を意味する口語表現です。 正式には政府の給付制度にはそれぞれ名前がありますが、日常会話ではまとめて the dole と呼ばれることがよくあります。 第二次世界大戦後のオーストラリアでは、多くの人がこの表現を使うようになり、現在でもニュースや日常会話で耳にすることがあります。 ただし、「dole」という言葉には、人によって少し古い響きや否定的なニュアンスを感じる場合もあります。今、おそらく「dole」より、実際に政府が生活支援金の事務的管理している機関である「Centrelink」という表現を使うでしょう。 豪キャブラリー 英語 Dole 意味 失業手当や生活支援金など、公的な給付金を指す口語表現。 例文 He’s been on the dole for six months. 「彼は半年間、失業給付を受けています。」 日本とのつながり 日本にも失業給付制度がありますが、「dole」のように一言で表現する口語はあまりありません。 言葉そのものよりも、その言葉に込められた社会の価値観を見ると、その国が少し見えてきます。

    Modern Japanese is filled with examples of borrowed words from foreign languages, which are known as gairaigo. “G’day” is probably widely known throughout Japan as a symbol of Australian English, but there are some even more uniquely Australian words that have also made their way into Japanese. 　現代の日本語は、外国語を由来とする、いわゆる外来語が多く、オージー英語から来ている言葉もその例外ではない。日本では「グッダイ」が、オージー英語の典型的な例としてよくあげられるが、実際に日常生活の中でもオーストラリア先住民語が使われているという事実がある。
