同町は故英国首相ウィンストン・チャーチル氏に名づけられて、同氏の象徴だった葉巻がBig Cigarのアイディアの生まれだ。最初、町内５ヶ所で巨大葉巻を立てる予定だったが、結局一つだけになった。
同町は、約3年前放火によって始まった山火事が起こり、11人も死亡となり、火事が広域に渡って害を与えた。

砂漠のド真中にあるビール大好きなクジラ
西オーストラリア州最も東方町であるユークラは、人口86人しかいないにも関わらず結構面白い過去を誇る町でありながら、かなりユニークな「Big Things」の所在地でもある。 ユークラは、ナラボー平野にあり、砂漠のド真ん中にある。しかし、同町の「Big Things」が長さ10メートル、高さ３メートルのクジラであるユークラ・ホエールだ。皮肉的にBig Whaleが実際称えるものより小さいのが事実だ。厳密に言えばBig WhaleがSmall Whaleと言うべきかもしれない。 しかし、砂漠とは言え、海岸添えの町なので、それほど不思議ではない。そして、同町でホエール・ウォッチングが優れているため、少人数しか済んでいないド田舎町でも、場外れでもないかもしれない。しかし、ホエールは、ビール看板の下に置かれている、近くに水が無くてもボートがあり、そもそも意味不明な「Big Things」の上に不思議さをさらに増加するんだ。 ユークラと言えば、電報拠点として19世紀半ば頃に設立して、一時期人口数百人程度まで成長した。しかし、1921年にウサギによって町が破壊されて、以降現在と同じぐらいの人口・大きさのままだ。「ウサギに破壊された」ってちょっと信じられない話しだろうが、本当だった。当時、ウサギが大発生した。ユークラは、元々砂丘に置かれたが周りの植物が大量に増加されたウサギに食べられて、ビルなどの基礎をはじめ、町全体の基盤が崩れた。大発生を解決した後町全体を数百メートル動かして、新たに町を作った。 また、1971年に同町が「ナラボー・ニンフ」と言う話しで一世風靡をし、世界的に有名となったことがあった。しかし、「ナラボー・ニンフ」の話しを別の機会にしよう。 大きな地図で見る

What a Hugh-ge spelling mistake! 豪出身ハリウッド俳優ヒュー・ジャックマンが主演となり、真田広之や岡本多緒共演の2013年公開予定映画「ウルヴァリン: SAMURAI」をシドニーで撮影し、同市の一角を10月16日までに映画の舞台である東京に変身した。 行ったことがなければ、再現したところを人目で見れば日本の都市のどこかと思われるかもしれないが、よ～く見るとビルの２階窓の看板に貼っている字がオーストラリア独特な「She’ll be right, mate（なんとかなる、さ）」気持ちを込めているようだ、、、間違っている！ 「ヨガ」のはずであるの「ヨ」の向けが逆になっている。 しょうがないね、、、 Tokyo in Parramatta Video: Parramatta transformed into Tokyo
