  • A Cry in the Dark

Riding in the morning now is cold, dark and gloomy….kinda like the state of my mind for quite some time now. But, and I guess this is like my mentality, too, there’s also an exquisite beauty to the late autumn mornings. Mists over the Tama River are breathtaking (that could be weight and age, though!). And the gradation of the sky as the sun prepares to rise is a delight, glowing a reddish orange at the horizon and slowly darkening into a deep blue, almost black the higher it goes. The pampas grass looks like a pink blanket over the riverbanks. The Tama Toshi Monorail also gives the otherwise somewhat…

  • Settling Back Down To Being Unsettled

After a magnificently enjoyable week off that followed a month of working from home with little external pressure, the return to reality has been more unsettling than resuming the settling effects of routine. I guess the passage of time will make things easier. It has been pretty hectic in some ways, nonetheless. Just getting back to commuting, using the sometimes unfriendly ticket vending machines, packing myself into the train carriage with thousands of others, and then the grueling trip downtown where each stop means even more commuters cramming in with us. Getting into the office, I was rewarded with a swag full of company merch! Work has eased me back…

I’m still in pretty much full-time panic mode, so I woke before 3 a.m., had brekkie and readied myself to head out on my customary morning ride. After I kitted up and readied, I looked outside in the dark and noticed raindrops falling into the bird bath. I opened the door and learned the rain was falling harder than…

  • Bouncing in All the Wrong Places

Despite the presence of kangaroos and their proclivity for jumping, there’s a bit too much shaking and bouncing going on in and around Tokyo, with dozens of earthquakes shaking their nearby Izu peninsula over the past week or so. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake that crushed large parts of Tokyo and Yokohama, killing over 100,000. And that quake was preceded by quakes in the same area that they’re happening now. Tokyo is overdue a natural disaster with earthquakes and volcanoes frequently smashing the metropolis every few decades in its roughly 4 1/4-century existence. (There have been a few man-made disasters that ravaged the city,…
