Heading Toward New Horizons

We’re off to a new home, thanks to the miraculous passage of a housing loan, and I’m getting a new job as the company looks for ways to deal with the pandemic.

We’re moving back over the hill from Kawasaki into Tama and into a delightful place now undergoing renovations. Work is another matter. It smells a bit fishy. We were told the shift a day before it initially happened before a short postponement, and the company is saying it’s a transfer for administrative purposes and we will continue to use the same company name and contacts despite belonging to a completely different entity. Today, I found they have terminated our employment, and not just transferred us. I need the job for the loan, so I can’t contest it, but it smells and I don’t think much good can come of this.

The Wolverine, a movie with strong Australia-Japan connections with Hugh Jackman as its star and much of the action taking place in Japan, is being plagued by people stealing its Japanese-influence sumi-e posters, according to the Melbourne Age on April 23. In a phenomenon similar to that seen in Japan about 20 years ago when women were stealing posters featuring SMAP performer Takuya Kimura‘s posters from public areas, distributor 20th Century Fox faces the mixed pleasure of seeing proof of the upcoming movie’s popularity in the theft of the materials used to promote it, probably because of the popularity of its heartthrob star, Hugh Jackman, in addition…

Movemberの「mo」はmoustache(唇ひげ)が由来。 Movember

  • Why Do Aussies Call Someone A “No Hoper”?

“He’s a no hoper.” Word no hoper 発音 /ˌnəʊ ˈhəʊpə/ Meaning 見込みのない人。 Example Everyone reckons he’s a no hoper, but he keeps trying.

Timeworn Tinnies A Sign Of The Times

I’ve lived in Japan far longer than I spent in my native Australia. I love my adopted homeland to the bottom of my heart and cannot go close to expressing the gratitude this land has given me for a life I would never have dreamed possible. Yet, in the nearly four decades I have dwelled in Japan, my nostalgia for Australia has never waned. In fact, the further I move from my departure, the stronger the sentiment becomes, admittedly warped and unrealistic. But the yearning has been assuaged by, of all things, tin signs. Thanks to Temu.com, I’ve been able to find all sorts of signs that allow me to…

  • Feast of Flowers

There’s much to love about Tokyo in May–long, warm days with little rain (for the most part), lots of greenery and things settle down after the hectic early months of spring when much of the country starts and ends the business year. Little, though, can beat the delight that the month’s flowers bring. For me, at least. Of course, the real stars of the Japanese spring flora are the cherry blossoms, wisteria and azaleas as the main players, but they’re usually gone by the time May hits its straps in the middle of the month (and there are plenty of other flowers that bloom beautifully, too, I’ve got to note)….
