Cheap As Chips Akiya For Aussies: One-Stop Bogan Basement Buys

Cheap Houses in Japan for Aussies

Japan’s market for akiya, literally “empty homes,” continues to offer astonishing bargains — from ¥0 giveaways to charming kominka under ¥1 million. And with the yen being weaker against the Aussie dollar than it has been for decades, there’s no better time for those Down Under to get on top of the akiya trend.

Market Snapshot

Japan’s depopulation continues to accelerate, especially in rural prefectures. Municipalities are increasingly motivated to offload vacant homes, and several regions have expanded subsidies for renovation, relocation, or child‑raising.

With the yen at an historically low level, even renovated homes are now comparatively affordable.

Big Chook

A Symbol Of Japan That Fits Australia Like A Shoe

Given the powerful pull of the surf culture in Australia, a link with Katsushika Hokusai‘s The Great Wave Off Kanagawa that immediately conveys an image of Japan was almost inevitable, but also symbolizes the strong ties between the two countries almost made for each other. Countless Australian companies, organizations, entrepreneurs, artists and others utilize or have utilized directly or derivatively the iconic Japanese work forming one of Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Even though the Great Wave is an instantly recognizable image that embodies the essence of Japanese spirit, particularly with the inclusion of Mount Fuji, Australia has long recognized the work as a shared connection between the countries….

    Big Blue Heeler

McDonald’s Australia has decided to get Serious! Literally, with the Serious Lamb Burger. But, and we’re sorry to be Maccas whackers, the Aussie Deli due out in Japan later this month is, frankly, insincere to Japanese consumers at best, and blatantly false advertising at worse. About the only things “Aussie” in McDonald’s Japan’s upcoming Aussie Deli burger are the name and the type of beef used in the patties, a point the local restaurant chain probably recognizes by marketing it as “Australian-born taste” rather than something specifically linking it to Down Under. But at around the same time it goes on sale, the more authentically Australian…
