There’s McDonald’s in just about every town in Japan, but in Fuchu at the moment, there’s a couple of MacDonalds with a very special story, indeed.　日本全国どこへ行ってもマクドナルドはある。でも今、東京・府中にある“マクドナルド”はちょっとワケが違う。

Connor and Callum MacDonald are brothers from Brisbane, and both professional sports people whose games took them to different sides of the world….except for now.　ブリスベン出身の兄弟、コナー・マクドナルドとカラム・マクドナルド。ともにプロアスリートとして世界を股にかけて戦ってきた2人のキャリアが、いま再び交差している。

Connor MacDonald is in Fuchu as part of the Australian team taking part in the Japan leg of the World Baseball Classic, which will be held in Tokyo in March. The Aussies are based in Fuchu, which they have made their home away from home for the third time, and join a long list of Australian sporting teams to base themselves in the suburban Tokyo city. 兄のコナーは、3月に東京で開催されるWorld Baseball Classic（WBC）日本ラウンドに臨むオーストラリア代表の一員として来日中。代表チームは今回で3度目となる府中を拠点に“第二のホーム”を構え、これまで数々の豪州スポーツチームがベースキャンプを張ってきたこの街に再び根を下ろしている。

One of the reasons they’re in Fuchu is because it promotes itself as Rugby City, courtesy of being home to two professional rugby union teams. One of those, Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo, is the team of Callum MacDonald, Connor’s younger brother and a resident of Fuchu for the past five years. 府中が選ばれる理由のひとつは、自らを“ラグビーの街”と掲げるその土壌。市内には2つのプロラグビーチームが本拠を置く。そのひとつが、弟カラムの所属する東芝ブレイブルーパス東京だ。カラムはこの5年間、府中を拠点にプレーしてきた。

With Connor plying his talents on diamonds in Australia and the U.S. and Callum scrumming in Japan the siblings are crossing paths on sporting fields, albeit half a world away from their native Brisbane. 兄はオーストラリアとアメリカのダイヤモンドで腕を振るい、弟は日本でスクラムを組む。生まれ故郷ブリスベンからは地球半周。それでも今、2人は同じ街で汗を流している。

Callum has been showing Connor the sights. “He’s been showing me all the restaurants, little spots, and the sights and scenes of Fuchu. It’s been amazing to have my home here and spend some time with him that I don’t always get,” Connor told Eric Balnar, who has been writing an amazing series of stories on the Australian team in Fuchu for Baseball.com.au. 弟カラムは、兄に府中の魅力を案内して回っているという。「レストランとか、ちょっとした穴場スポットとか、府中の景色や雰囲気をいろいろ見せてくれてるんだ。ここを“自分のホーム”にしている彼と、こうして一緒に過ごせる時間は本当に特別だよ」。そう語ったのはコナー。取材したのは、Baseball.com.auでオーストラリア代表の府中滞在記を精力的に発信しているエリック・バルナー氏だ。

Kangaeroo.com visited one of their games last weekend and was impressed by how closely the community got behind the Aussies, a credit both to the team and the typical warmth and hospitality of many people in Japan.　先週末、Kangaerooも代表の試合を観戦。スタンドからは、地元ファンが一体となってオージーたちを後押しする姿が見られた。チームの努力はもちろん、そして何より、日本の人々が持つあたたかさとホスピタリティの賜物だろう。
