Why Did Suntory Choose Jacko For Its Ads?

In the 1980s, one of Australia’s most colourful sporting personalities unexpectedly found himself on Japanese television. AFL star Mark “Jacko” Jackson wasn’t a movie actor or musician, yet Suntory believed he had something special to offer Japanese audiences. Why?

Bigger Than Footy

In Australia, Mark “Jacko” Jackson was already famous.

A talented Australian Rules footballer, he became equally well known for his humour, confidence and unmistakable personality.

His catchphrase, “I’m an Individual”, made him one of Australia’s most recognisable media personalities.

Japan Was Discovering Australia

During the 1980s, Japan’s interest in Australia was growing rapidly.

More Japanese families were travelling overseas, Australian wine was attracting attention, and television increasingly portrayed Australia as open, adventurous and welcoming.

Jacko’s personality fitted that image perfectly.

Selling a Feeling

Suntory built its reputation on memorable advertising.

Rather than simply promoting products, its campaigns often celebrated lifestyles, emotions and personalities.

Jacko brought something advertising professionals value highly.

Authenticity.

He looked unmistakably Aussie because he was unmistakably himself.

An Unexpected Cultural Ambassador

Jacko wasn’t representing the Australian Government.

He wasn’t promoting tourism.

Yet millions of Japanese viewers came to associate his energy and humour with Australia itself.

Without intending to, he became an informal ambassador for his country.

More Than a Commercial

Most television commercials disappear from memory.

Jacko’s did not.

For Australians living in Japan during the 1980s, it was always surprising to see such a familiar face appear on Japanese television.

For Japanese viewers, he represented a country that seemed relaxed, confident and full of characters.

An Unknown Nichigo Story

When people think about Australia–Japan friendship, they usually imagine politicians, trade agreements or business leaders.

Few think about an AFL footballer making Japanese television audiences smile.

Yet Mark “Jacko” Jackson helped introduce a generation of Japanese viewers to a cheerful, approachable image of Australia.

Sometimes, friendship begins with laughter.

Did You Know?

Long before the internet connected Australia and Japan, television commercials introduced millions of Japanese viewers to Aussie personalities. Mark “Jacko” Jackson was one of the most unexpected.

    There’s Something Fishy About豪州の魚介類Big Things!

Giant Murray Cod in Australia
