A jaffle is a toasted sanger made by toasting a couple of slices of bread filled with ingredients, buttered on the outside and then toasted in a jaffle maker. A staple for Aussies everywhere.

　二枚のパンの間に具材を挟み、それを専用の器具（ジャッフルメーカー）で焼き、外側がカリッとした状態で提供されるサンドイッチの一種である。オージーの定番メニュのひとつ。

  • Sooky Sook And The Slur That Brings Tears (If They’re Not Already There)

    もしもう涙が出ていなければ、出してしまう悪口 “You’re being a sook.” That probably isn’t the kind of encouragement you were hoping for. If an Aussie calls someone a sook, they are usually saying that the person is being overly sensitive, complaining, whining or behaving like a cry baby. Sooky is the corresponding adjective. sook は、「泣き虫」「弱音を吐く人」「すぐ文句を言う人」などに近い言葉です。sooky は「泣き言ばかり言う」「すぐ弱音を吐く」「ひ弱な感じ」という形容詞です。ただし、いつも強烈な悪口というわけではありません。仲間同士で冗談めかして使うこともあります。 Meaning Sook is a person who is soft, whiny, overly sensitive or prone to complaining. Sooky describes someone behaving that way. Example “Stop being sooky and get on with it.” 「そんなに弱音を吐いてないで、さっさとやれよ。」 “He’s a bit of a sook when things don’t go his way.” 「自分の思い通りにならないと、あいつはちょっと泣き言が多いんだ。」 Australia Japan Connection 日本語にも「泣き虫」「弱虫」「へたれ」など、相手の態度をからかう表現があります。sook も、そのような親しい間柄の軽いからかいから、かなり嫌味な批判まで幅があります。声の調子と人間関係が重要です。 Aussie英語では、人をからかうことが必ずしも敵意を意味するとは限りません。sook と呼ばれても、笑いながら言われたなら、単なるmate同士のからかいかもしれません。 If You Liked This, How About These…?

    Rageはほかの英語圏の国でいうと「怒る」か「おこる」の意味になるがオージー英語では同様の使い方の上に「盛り上がる」という意味にもなる。英語ではステロイド服用の副作用である怒りをroid rageと言い、車などの事故後の激怒はroad rageだけどオージー英語のall night rageは一晩中怒っているという意味じゃなくて、一晩中遊んでいるという意味になる。

    　オージー英語はStrine（ストライン）とも言う。オーストラリア鉛の特徴の一つがしゃべる時に母音を極端に伸ばしてほかの表現を短くすることだ。つきましては、「オーストラリアン」をいう時に鉛に慣れていない人は、「ストライン」や「ストラヤン」に聞こえるらしい。そこで、パロディとして1960年代Afferbeck Lauder氏がストラインという言葉を造語し、今広く使われているようになった。（ちなみに、同氏の名前がalphabetical order < ＡＢＣ順＞のストラインらしい発音でかけているジョークネームである。）

    In Strine, a flannie is a shirt made out of a wool-like material called flannelette. The flannie, sometimes also called a flanno, is an iconic item of clothing in Australia, often viewed as part of the bogan uniform. ストライン（オージー英語）では、「flannie」とは、フランネルというウールのような素材で作られたシャツのことを指します。「flannie」は「flanno」とも呼ばれることがあり、オーストラリアを代表する衣類の一つであり、しばしば「bogan」の定番スタイルの一部と見なされています。 The flannel can also be used to refer to a wash cloth. Flannelは、雑巾の意味もある。

    Boomerang Shrine And Shooting The Rapids

    Mrs. Kangaeroo and I got another wonderful experience shooting down the rapids in the delightful Saitama Prefecture town of Nagatoro, which is also home to a shrine hoping to draw people back with something of an Aussie touch. Boomerang Kaeru Shrine, just outside Nagatoro Station, is dedicated to the worship of frogs, but is actually a play on words. The Japanese for frog is kaeru (蛙), but also a homonym for returning home (帰る), hence the boomerang, which (allegedly) returns to the thrower upon being hurled. (This is a story for another day). Also got to find some Engrish that appealed to my eternal schoolboy side.
