J.League powerhouse Yokohama F Marinos have such a strong connection with Australia it makes you wonder whether the club has gotten mixed up with merinos, the sheep attributed with making Australia rich. The Marinos recently appointed Steve Corica as coach, the sixth Aussie to hold the post since 2019.

In January 2018, Ange Postecoglou arrived at Yokohama F. Marinos after leading Australia to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
Many wondered whether his adventurous attacking style would suit Japanese football.

When Postecoglou left for Celtic in 2021, the club faced a choice.
Rather than change direction, Marinos appointed fellow Australian Kevin Muscat, who understood the team’s philosophy and continued the same attacking approach.
He rewarded that faith by leading the club to another J1 League title in 2022.

Harry Kewell succeeded Muscat, with fellow Australian John Hutchinson serving as his assistant before becoming caretaker manager.
In 2025, another Australian, Patrick Kisnorbo, took charge, and in 2026 Steve Corica became the latest Aussie appointed by the club.
