Firies Are Literally Aussies Who Go To Blazes

“ファイアリーズ”は文字どおり火の中へ飛び込むオージーたち

When most people see smoke, they start moving away. When a firie sees smoke, they may be heading straight towards it. Firie is the very Aussie informal word for a firefighter.

firie は firefighter を短くしたAussie英語です。複数形は firies。オーストラリア英語では、長い言葉を短くして -ie や -y を付けるパターンが非常に多くあります。barbecue が barbie、relative が rellie、firefighter が firie になるのと同じ発想です。Australian National Dictionary Centreも firie を firefighter の略語として説明し、1980年代からの記録があるとしています。

Meaning

Firie means firefighter. The plural is firies. It is an informal shortening of firefighter, using the familiar Australian -ie ending.

Example

“The firies arrived within minutes.”

「消防士たちは数分で到着した。」

“The firies did an amazing job getting everyone out.”

「消防士たちは、全員を避難させるために素晴らしい仕事をした。」

Australia Japan Connection

日本語では「消防士」が普通で、「消防」をさらに親しみやすく短縮するような形はあまりありません。Aussie英語では、人を表す職業名まで短くしてしまいます。そのため、firie は単語そのものだけでなく、Aussieの言葉の作り方を学ぶ教材にもなります。

考えRoo の考え

firie を覚えたら、-ie の魔法にも注目してください。Aussie英語では、長い単語を短くして親しみやすくするのが大得意。firie はその代表選手です。
